Page, 1 Eve The Lion’ S ie On Enrntertainment Api 15h, 2009 BEE Eat, Pray, Love: A Book Review ELI ee BE Tt H ki IL LEER T By Christina Furia Lion's Eye Staff Writer is cmf269@psu.edu - y Have you ever been so completely lost in your life that you felt like you didn’t know what to do, where to go, or who you were any- more? Trauma does that. Loss, pain, guilt, anger, shame, all of these things can do that to any one of us at any given time. They can happen unex- pectedly and no matter how much we may try to block it out, eventually we have to come to terms with that. Eliza- beth Gilbert’s #1 New York Times Bestseller Eat, Pray, Love is a book that when I started reading I really didn’t know what to expect. But from the very beginning, Gilbert used her writing as her voice and I can’t explain how captivated I was. Gilbert goes through a traumatizing divorce, and Te does not know how to deal with it. She realizes the picture perfect life that she seemed to have with her husband in her country home in New York as a successful journalist for GQ is not one where she found happiness. Instead, Gilbert realized, in what one would call an act of despera- tion in her own bathroom, that she did not only want to have children with the man she was married to any time soon, but she no longer wanted to be married to him either. So what did she do in that desperate moment? She prayed, something that she’d never done before in her life. Gilbert recounts how traumatic it was to end her marriage to the man that used to be her best friend, how she let him blame her, said he could have anything he wanted so that maybe he wouldn’t hate her so much, and the reader cannot help but sympathize with her heart breaking tale. After Gilbert decides to leave her husband, she jumps into the arms of another man before her husband has even agreed to sign the papers to divorce her. This relation- Photo Courtesy of Penguin Books ship is a whirlwind, it is intense, and Gilbert throws herself head first with everything her heart has left into loving her new boyfriend David. But when a person is emotionally in turmoil, doesn’t really know who they are or what they want out of life, a relationship is really the last thing to jump into. Gilbert learns this by having to leave David because his unemotional attitude does nothing to sooth her millions of insecurities about not only _their relationship but about herself as person. She finally realizes that she needs to do this for herself and decides to take back her life, away from David, who she believes at the time to be the love of her life. Gilbert embarks on a journey and search to find everything across the three I countries: Italy, India, and Indonesia. She goes alone, with the hopes that being away from the meltdown of what her life has become in New York she can find her inner voice again and start to rebuild herself and learn what a balanced life is really all about. Gilbert talks about how she finds pleasure in Italy by eating their food and learning their language, devotion and God in India through prayer and meditation, and a balance be- ‘tween both of these in Indonesia. Her memoirs are heart felt, witty, relatable, and provide such insight into her journey that it could indeed change your life or make you want to start. From the very beginning to the very end I felt like I was right there with Liz, liv- ing through the sorrow and sadness with her, to the balance and happiness of what life should be. I recommend this book to anyone who has ever been through hardships, or - who simply doesn’t know where they are going in their lives. It has quickly become one of my favorite books and Gilbert is like an old dear friend I never knew I had.
