Vol. XXXIX, No. 5 By Sharon Achilles and Michele Roche saal92@psu.edu & mer5013@psu.edu Student leaders dedicate their time and energy day after day simply because they want to. They don't do it, for the spot light, glittering awards or praise. This was a reoccurring sentiment expressed at Penn State Delaware County's Leadership Recognition Night on April 19. As the spring semester comes to a close, this first annual event featured some of the school's hardest work- ing students and faculty who stood up to honor each other. "This is a celebration of our best leaders," said associ- ate director for student affairs, Chris Coia in his opening remarks. Held in the evening, this is the first time an event of this nature took place. Traditionally student awards were given during common hour. The event sponsored by the SGA and the Office of Student Life, combined acknowl- edgement of clubs and organizations, student leadership awards, as well as the recognition of outgoing student body president and inauguration of new SGA officers. "Student leaders motivate peers and can increase par- ticipation in events," said Nida Qadeer in her welcome address. Dava Murray, coordinator of student involvement, presented the club and organization awards, which were selected from nomination made for students and faculty. As the recipient of each award walked up to receive the certificate she read remarks from a select handful of nom- ination forms. The Club of the Year went to the Information Science Technologies (IST) Club. Paul Hurych accepted the award as president of the club on behalf of his members. "IST is an absolutely wonderful addition to the cam- pus," said Murray. The IST club also had an incredible increase in mem- bership over the past year. Penn State University, Delaware County The Muslim Student Association (MSA) and Qadeer accepted the award for Outstanding Program or Event of the Year. "MSA created a wonderful event, the Iftar Dinner, cel- ebrating Muslim culture on campus. The event promoted diversity...," said Murray. Although not in attendance, Dr. Laura Guertin, associ- ate professor of earth sciences was recognized as Club/ Organization Advisor of the Year. "She always went above and beyond for MADE and THON. She was able to guide students in the right direc- tion," said Murray. Next, the most anticipated awards of the evening were | presented. Coia said "I personally want to thank all of the student leaders on behalf of student life. These students were truly dedicated, some came to school early before class and leave late." "What makes a student leader?" he asked. "An individ- ual or group of students pushing boundaries to achieve a goal. They excel and achieve outside of the classroom...they help each other." "They are the students who come to school early and leave late. They go beyond the classroom, putting all of their effort and time into the goals that they are aiming for." The Outstanding Adult recognition went to Gloria Boyd for her exceptional balance between work and her focus of students and the community. The Outstanding Service to Community Awarded was given to Sean Nichols for his incomparable devotion to others. "Its amazing how one person can make a difference," said Nichols. "You find out who people are through their hard work and through all of their challenges." Qadeer left with the Barbara Jackson Award, given to students who really leave an impact on the PSU commu- nity. Through her hard work with multicultural events to April 24, 2006 Top Delco Student Leaders Recognized bring out the large range of diversity on the campus, the award and the winner fit perfectly. "I noticed that there weren't many multicultural events taking place on this campus," said Qadeer. "I wanted to help the diverse students feel like they were a part of something. Everyone who's here should be involved. You really learn a lot." Hailed as being "Penn State Delaware County", Crystal Bowhall earned the Eric A. Josephine Award, which is signed by the President of the University. Leaving a lasting impression on the campus, she has always lent a helping hand when needed. An emotional Stacie Mann former President of the SGA delivered her outgoing speech and called the 2006- 2007 party to the podium to take their oath, followed by incoming president Paul Hurych's speech. After the awards were given out, students and faculty were treated to coffee and desserts, such as cookies, toffee bars, and pound cake in the lounge. Everyone mingled, while students who were awarded glowed with pride and even surprise. "Just knowing that people care and recognize you can make a difference on campus. It's truly an honor in itself, " said Nichols. Other recipients have watched past student leaders grab esteemed awards here at Delco. Now they were ecstatic to follow in their footsteps. "I've watched Stacie Mann and Uzair Qadeer receive this award [Eric A. Josephine]. They are my role models and to live up to them has been an amazing experience," said Bowhall.
