Homelessness Threatens America; Forgotten Children Endangered By Nick Indeglio “In San Antonio, I met a father with two boys who had been sleeping for four months next to a highway not far from the Hyatt Regency Hotel.” wrote Jonathan Kozol, author of the book Rachel and Her Children and an expert researcher on the homeless situation in America. His text may be familiar to those who have had Mr. Kovach for Introduction to Sociology. “He sold blood plasma twice a week to buy food for his kids...In a good month he made $100.” Sounds like something from a horror movie, doesn’t it? Well, it’s not. It is even worse. This is real life. "Sounds like something from a horror movie, doesn't it? Well, it's not. Itis even worse. This is real life.” This is a story that thousands of people across America can relate to. It's a nightmare that homeless people in this country don’t wake up from. Itis also a situation that we, as students, can do something about. When most people envision homeless people, they see a broken down old man sleeping on a sewer grate or an aging lady pushing a shopping cart through the city. It is unfortunate that such stereotypes exist. The truth is that in 1988 alone, there were fourteen million children living in poverty. If they were not sleeping in the streets then they were sleeping shelters or ave-viciins of a. system: Which. locks them in an inescapable maze known as welfare. So here we are. We are students of the Pennsylvania State University. We are students with a bed to sleepin, food to eat, and a safe place to study. There are things we can do to help those who are less fortunate. If the students joined together, we could start a program to collect clothes for the upcoming winter season. We could have several collection dates, on campus or off, to procure as many items as possible by the holidays. When December finally rolls around, we can give the kids the best gift we know of...a little warmth from a harsh winter and a little hope in their cold and gray lives. Several clubs and organizations on campus focus their attentions on community service or volunteer work. A clothes drive is one activity that would definitely be educational for the students and beneficial for the children. This clothes drive will be proposed at an upcoming Student Government meeting. “We had no money to buy a Christmas tree or toys. We buy them what they need (heavy clothes and winter boots) so they will not feel different from the other kids at school. All the money that we have, it goes to them. They're nice kids. They deserve it.” Yes, they do. They deserve it. So let’s do Something about it! What do you think of this month’s issue? Let us know! Drop your note in our mail box. By James Foltz I'm sure that there were many smiling faces anxiously awaiting the arrival of the first day of classes. I'm also sure that for every smiling, happy face, there was another filled with gloom and dread. Needless to say, all of those faces ended up here on August 24. Welcome freshmen. You were greeted by a temperature of 62 degrees at about 7:45 in the morning. Both the sun and the moon, facing opposite directions, were out to say, “Hello.” A cool breeze blew across campus to make sure that those who were half a sleep would certainly be woke. New, unfamiliar faces that would soon be recognizable as friends and classmates were also on the welcoming committee. Maze-like structures readying to gobble you up as you to Penn State, searched for classes were waiting to. be called home. You fidgeted around in your seat uncomfortably as a professor stood menacingly over you, only to offer guidance and encouragement. And you wander around campus, giving prayers that lightning might strike you dead from the clear blue sky. Finally, the day is done, the "You wander around campus, giving prayers that lightning might strike you dead from the clear blue sky." classes are over and you've made it to the comfort and familiarity of your home. The big question is asked, “How was it?” You think it over. You rummage through your memory of your first day. “It was great!” Going to bed that night you actually look forward to going back the following day. College isn’§ so bad. No, not at all. "If you have to use ice cream to prove him innocent then that is ridiculous!" Guilty or Innocent, is what a jury must decide later this month, in the highly controversial case of the state of California versus O. J. Simpson. O.].’s trouble started back in June when his ex-wife Nicole and her friend Ron Goldman were found stabbed to death at Nicole's house. After this happened O.]. seemed to act as usual. It was not until the night when he and his friend , Al Cowlens drove down the Santa Monica freeway being followed by the police for about an hour that people began to think of O.]. as a suspect in the case. "Innocent people don't run," said Jim Foltz, one of the editors of the Lion's Eye . Thanks to technology, millions of viewers got to witness the whole event live as it was unfolding. No one knew how it was going to turn out. ~~ Much has happened since that long night. Being televised on almost every network, the public was able to see first hand how the judicial system works. For example, those who tuned in to watch were able to see the many people who testified, along with the endless disputes over evidence like the blood samples. Watching this trial day after day, people began forming their own theories on this case. With O.].'s past history as a pro football player many people have mixed emotions about this trial. One student 1 spoke with said O.J. had to be innocent because of all the confusion with the evidence. On the other hand, others I spoke with thought he was guilty because all the evidence points to him. If O.]. committed the murders or not, he is still guaranteed a fair trial. Hopefully he will receive one. Everyone is innocent until proven guilty, even O.]. Simpson. FACT | American use enough toilet paper each year to sfretch to the moon and bac almost 670 times.
