Study Abroad:
Study Around the World
On Penn State Tuition
By Margot C. Karpathy
How would you like to spend
time studying abroad? That's just what
Bob Lewis did this past summer, and
he loved it! He was one of eight Penn
Staters who spent three weeks during
the months of June and July at
Westminster College near London, a
school that used to be part of
Westminster Abby and recently joined
Oxford University.
“We have an agreement with
several universities throughout the
world, including England, Japan,
Australia, and Germany,” explained
Dr. Alessandra Graves, contact person
for the foreign study program, “and
students can choose to study abroad
“either for one semester or a whole
year.”
The prerequisites include a GPA
of at least 2.5 and letters of
recommendation from two professors,
emphasizing the student's level of
maturity and self-discipline. Students
can only go after their junior year,
however, and applications must be
mailed in approximately one year
ahead of time since the slots are
limited.
“Certain universities have
specialized programs,” Dr. graves
continued. For example, for business
administration, foreign language,
architecture or engineering majors, she
recommends the Australian or Great
Britain universities. All, of course, offer
general courses of study.
Bob Lewis studied “Western
Economy in Transition” from the
European perspective, which he took
in order to round out his liberal studies
program in sociology and education.
“There’s an emerging global
community happening around us, “
he said about his choice of study, “and
we cannot operate within ourselves
without seeing other systems, without
knowing how to integrate the two
approaches, and without basing our
decisions on more than simply our
own values.”
According to Lewis, it was a high
intensity course: 15 weeks’ work
squeezed into five hour schooldays
that “placed a lot of responsibility on
students through the [British] system.”
There was “no student participation
but solely lectures, exams, midterm, a
final, and some field trips.”
But even though the eight hour
trips were also mostly lectures, Lewis
enjoyed them. “We went to the areas
we were discussing,” he smiled, “like
health-care institutions and public
housing areas.” It was a time of “lots of
fun and good friends, as well as greater
awareness, confidence in the future.”
He made the Dean’s List for the
summer.
“It's great experience for
everyone who wants to get ahead in
the world,” Dr. Graves said. If nothing
else, just think how it would look on
your resume! “Every college student
should study abroad for at least a
semester,” Lewis agreed. :
And the best part? The cost of
studying abroad is the same as it would
be to study at University Park. There
are scholarships, loans, and financial
aid available, so the only extra cost the
student must cover is the airline tickets.

Lion Ambassadors Roar!
By Phillip Hoertz
Getting involved in your school
is very important these days, and
joining a school club is a great way to
get involved and meet new people.
Becoming a Lion Ambassador is one
way for students to become part of the
campus.
The Lion Ambassadors isa group
of students who render services to the
campus. They can be a tour guide for
prospective students, a campus host
or greeter at special events, or take
part in raising money for charities.
Raising school spirit by organizing
campus events is also a responsibility
for Lion Ambassadors.
Upcoming events the Lion
Ambassadors have scheduled include
a car wash to raise money for the
Leukemia Society of America, a
Thanksgiving food drive to help the
needy, and a holiday Candy Cane-O-
Gram to help raise school spirit.
Lion Ambassadors also interact
with University administrators,
faculty, and staff and learn how to
handle themselves in a variety of
situations. These skills could help
students in the future after college. To
be a Lion Ambassador, a student must
maintain a 2.5 GPA or better. If
interested, contact Mrs. Marianne
Rhodes in room 111F in main building
“or call 892-1253.
