System Gives Rise to Delco “Radio Station” With the resumption of Winter Term in January came a new sound to the student modules at Delco. The sound was and is the new Delco “Radio Broadcast’ Program. “Radio Broadcast’’ is in quotes because the program does not broadcast on any frequency like typical radio stations, but is transmitted over the Public Ad- dress system of the mod. Therefore a broadcasting license is not required. The “radio station’ at Delco was the idea and creation of Steffi - Stern, a Journalism major with a minor in Mass Communica- tions. ‘‘Star’’, as Steffi calls herself on the air, originally" broadcast over the U.S.A: joke this past fall when she discovered how to properly run the equipment. When Mark Huber took over the U.S.A. Presidency upon the resigna- tion of Dean Ashenfelter in January, ‘Star’ decided to make the broadcast program of- ficial. She accomplished that by drawing up a tentative program format which was approved by Dean Linder. Next she enlisted the aid of Mr. Steve Sciscione, a new Career Development Counselor at Delco, who became the Advisor to the pro- gram. The program is not a separate club and is currently an extension of U.S.A. Steffi explained part of the reasoning behind the creation of the ‘radio station” as a Public Address System as a Need A Roommate? When asked to explain what she meant she clarified her statement by say- ing that students don’t read the posters on the walls or the newsletters put out by the cam- pus. On the other hand many students congregate in the mods to talk, eat, and to just pass the time. Therefore when she broadcasts over the Public Address System she knows that at least some students will hear the campus news if they won't read it. ‘‘Star’ concen- trates mostly on upcoming con- certs and different club news. By no means is everything running as smoothly as Steffi would like. About a week ago the mixer, a piece of equipment which enables the announcer to speak while he is playing music, broke down. As a consequence it was no longer possible to play - records over the system. As of this writing the mixer is still broken. The music being heard now is either the radio or cassette tapes. The selection of . music played is determined by a sign-up sheet located in the U.S.A. office. At first one album was played once in the morning and once in the after- noon. However it came to Stef- fis’ attention that the people who heard the album in the afternoon were the same ones who had heard it in the morn- ing. Now one album is played in . the morning and another one in the afternoon. If anyone is in- terested in hearing their favorite record or tape they need only bring it in for the day they had signed-up for on the sheet in the U.S.A. office. There have been complaints from some students that they cannot study during the broad- cast. Admittedly the music tends to be louder during the broadcast than at other times. One would like to remind those students that the library and lounge in the main building are available for such purposes. A definite problem with the sound system that existed before the radio program is that of poor speaker . alignment. Currently the two speakers in the mod are directly opposite each other at one end of the room. As a result that section of the room gets blasted away while the other part of the room can hear the music comfortably. The other alternative is to play the music at a moderate level in the “speaker section’ in which event the other end of the room can’t hear the music. Hopefully the speaker arrangement will be altered to afford the optimal sound and noise level for the en- tire mod. Steffi has mentioned that she would like to cut back on the amount of dead air, or no sound, between broadcasts. To do so requires a quick maneuvering of the dials on the stereo. Therefore anyone interested in learning to broadcast must have some experience or knowledge of stereo equipment. Steffi said ‘‘I went into this not knowing a damn thing and the more I work with the equip- ment the more I learn and the more it pays off.” Aside from Steffi two others, Adam Gray and Amy Epstein, are acting as announcers for the new Delco program. Since the Delco ‘‘Radio Sta- tion’ is not a club there is little or no money available for im- provement, and participation is limited to those who are cur- rently announcing. Possibly for Spring Term there will be more people trained to work the equipment. Steffi mentioned that she would be glad to teach anyone interested what she knows about broadcasting. Presently she is applying for a permit to work at a live radio station on the air. Who knows, perhaps this is the beginning of a new club at Delco for anyone interested in Mass Communica- tions. 2 Chris Megargel " PINOCCHIO'S ® STROMBOLI | ® HOAGIES ® PIZZA ® 6 FOOT HOAGIES Gayley St. & Baltimore Pike. ® GRINDERS ® STEAKS ® TACOS ® ALL TYPES OF PLATTERS Restaurant and Pizzeria LO6-7767 LO6-4870 In Media, PA Daily: 10am-1am Sun:12pm-12am i
