The Fourth Wall Former Penn State President Charged Fabulous Flores Former Penn State University President Graham B. Spanier was charged November 1, 2012 with perjury, ob- struction of justice, endangering the welfare of children, and criminal conspiracy. Gary Schultz, a former universi- ty vice president and Tim Curley, the former athletic di- rector also received the same charges. : The three men were made aware of the allegations against Jerry Sandusky more than a decade prior to the case that made national headlines and lead to the arrest and conviction of Sandusky. The decision was made that they would approach Sandusky directly regarding the al- legations, rather than going to outside authorities. Spanier saw this course of action as a “humane and a reasonable way to proceed,” according to a February 2001 email ex- change between Spanier and the two top university offi- cials (Curley and Schultz); Spanier’s main priority seemed to have been how they and the university would look if Sandusky was ever caught, “The only downside for us is if the message isn’t ‘heard’ and acted upon, and we then become vulnerable for not having reported it.” The email is itself an admission of wrong doing; they knew what Sandusky did and chose to sweep it under the rug for fear of public exposure. Sandusky continued to abuse children. Had Spanier and the two other men acted sooner, it may have prevented the university’s image from being tarnished. Spanier’s law- yers contend that the charges are politically motivated and Spanier maintains his innocence. MAFS can pass resolutions which are monumental, but ultimately this decision lies with university administra- tors.
