; Dear Ms. Tiger...
The summer is approaching and I have some
interviews for jobs and internships coming
up. I need some tips for my interview. I don’t
know what to wear or what to even say.
Help!
: Dear Student,
i Relax. We all go through this. Getting that
io! opportunity to prove yourself is only part of
Li it. Now it’s time to show them what you got!
First, dress appropriately. Businesses like
professional people, and if you can pull that
off, you already passed the first part. Busi-
ness attire includes neutral colors, like blues
and grays. Black also never fails.
2 Make sure your résumé is well written and
PEE free of grammatical or format errors. Résu-
mes speak for you before you have a chance
to. It's good that you already have the inter-
view, but they might request your résumé or
ask questions about it. Be prepared to answer
any questions that arise.
Be on time. Remember: to be early is to be
» on time, to be on time is to be late, and to be
late is never acceptable. Make sure you know
your way to the site, and allow room in your
travel time for possible delays due to traffic,
accidents, etc. This is not a time to experi-
ment. If you know/are specific to a route,
stick to it.
Speak eloquently and clearly. You already
got this far, so don’t be nervous. They chose
you for a reason, so show them some more.
Be polite and show them how much you want
it.
Sites like Monster.com have resources to
help you prepare résumés and interview
skills. Also, remember the Career Services
office, located on the first floor of the Gen-
eral Studies Building, has free services like
résumé writing to assist students in this kind
of matter.
Let me know how it goes!
With love and paws,
Ms. Tiger
NICHOLAS PASTURA
On February 26%, 2012,
17-year-old Trayvon Martin was
shot and killed by 28-year-old
George Zimmerman, who was
not charged with a crime. Martin
was black; Zimmerman is mixed
raced (white/Peruvian). The evi-
dence stands strong that charges
should have been brought against
Zimmerman. Past comments
made by Zimmerman prior to
that night and what he may or
may not have said during the 911
call with police make Zimmer-
man almost certainly guilty of
racial profiling and possibly
committing a hate crime.
The night of the incident,
Zimmerman was driving in his
truck in the gated community the
event took place in when he
called police and reported a sus-
picious looking black male wear-
ing a hoodie, with his hand in his
waistband.
"This guy looks like he is
up to no good. He is on drugs or
something," Zimmerman told the
dispatcher.
The dispatcher told Zim-
merman that he should not take
any action, that they did not need
him to pursue Martin, and that
the police were on the way. Zim-
merman did not stand down. His
claim at the scene was that he
had gotten out of his truck to
check the name of the street that
he was on when Martin attacked
him from behind. Tracy Martin,
Trayvon Martin’s father, said
that police told him that, accord-
ing to Zimmerman, Martin
punched Zimmerman in the nose
and knocked him on his back. He
then climbed on top of Zimmer-
man, pinning his arms down with
his knees, told him to “shut the
fuck up” and then covered his
mouth with one hand and beat
him in the face with the other.
Zimmerman told police
that he managed to undo his hol-
ster and fire one round into Mar-
tin’s chest, causing him to fall
off of Zimmerman.
According to Zimmer-
man, Martin replied, “You got
me”, and then died. Zimmerman
claims that he acted in self-
defense because he feared for his
life. Martin was armed with Skit-
tles and an Arizona iced tea that
he had just purchased from a gas
station.
Zimmerman can clearly
be heard on the phone saying
"these assholes, they always get
away," only minutes before
Trayvon Martin was dead. Dur-
ing another blurry part of the call
Zimmerman can be heard mak-
ing a racist remark about Martin:
“fucking coons.”
Martin was also on the
phone only minutes before the
altercation occurred, talking to
his girlfriend. According to the
girl, whose parents have request-
ed anonymity, Martin had ex-
pressed to her worry that a
strange man was following him.
She advised him to run, which he
did, as was stated by Zimmerman
in his phone call with the police.
She claims she heard Martin ask,
“Why are you following me?” to
which Zimmerman replied,
“What are you doing here?” She
then said she heard what sounded
like pushing and then the phone
went silent, leading her to be-
lieve that Martin was knocked
down.
* George Zimmerman is
5°9”, 250 Ibs. Trayvon Martin
was 6°37, 140 lbs, leading some
to the conclusion that Martin,
who weighed over 100 pounds
less than Zimmerman, could not
manner as Zimmerman
claims. 5
According to a witness at
the scene who has been identi-
fied only as “John” in a state-
ment to Fox News Orlando, "the
guy on the bottom, who had a red
sweater on, was yelling to me,
Help! Help!" and I told him to
stop, and I was calling 911...And
then, when I got upstairs and
looked down, the guy who was
on the top beating up the other
guy, was the one laying in the
grass, and I believe he was dead
at that point."
Other witness reports are dif-
ferent. Many who have spoken to
police said that the police tried to
coerce them into agreeing with
Zimmerman’s account, and that
the police seemed to. be siding
with Zimmerman from the begin-
ning. Mary Cutcher and her
roommate did not see the inci-
dent play out, but they believe
"there was no punching, no hit-
ting going on at the time, no
wrestling." Police claim that they
gave testimony at the scene that
was in agreement with Zim-
merman’s, but on Anderson
Cooper’s CNN show they
claimed that the police lied about
them giving an account con-
sistent with Zimmerman’s, and
they demanded that police retract
the statement.
The lead homicide
investigator at the scene, Chris
Serino, stated in a sworn affida-
vit that he was not convinced of
Zimmerman'’s account.
