ANGELIC SINOVA Penn State Mont Alto has a wide selection of clubs and ac- tivities for both returning and new students to participate in. One particular club captures the hearts of students each year: THON. The Penn State IFC/ Panhellenic Dance Marathon, also known as THON, is a two day dance marathon Penn State hosts every February to raise money for kids with pediatric cancer. Even though the Dance Mara- thon is a two day event, THON participants raise money opinions, concerns, 4thwall.psu@gmail.com. throughout the year through a variety of fundraising events. Last year the Mont Alto THON Chapter hosted several fundrais- ing events, including Mr. Mont Alto, .a Talent Show, Blood Drives, and more. Even if you are not in THON, you can still make a difference. By attending THON-sponsored events, you are helping the Mont Alto THON chapter raise money. THON members also help raise money through canister solicitation, also called “canning.” Canning weekends are opportunities for students to travel across the commonwealth raising awareness for pediatric cancer and THON, and so- z liciting donations for The Four Diamonds Fund. The majority of the money a given organization raises for THON (around 60 percent) stems from these canning trips. When THON first started in 1973, a total of 78 dancers raised around $2,136. Now, 38 years later, the 708 dancers of 2011's THON raised $9,563,016.09 for kids with pediatric cancer. The Mont Alto THON group alone raised pledges totaling $25,580.06. Penn State students’ generosity have made THON the largest student-run philanthropy project in the world. With the CTH support of students and donors from across Pennsylvania, as well as THON Alumni all around the world, THON contin- ues to search for a cure for all childhood cancers. Keep in mind that fundraising is not the only focus. One of THON's primary goals is to raise awareness of the plight of chil- dren afflicted with pediatric can- cer. Thousands of children are diagnosed with pediatric cancer each year. With today’s medical breakthroughs, up to 70% of all children with cancer can be cured. THON educates people about the effects of pediatric cancer, and helps them find ways they can support and help these children. If you are inter- ested in joining THON, or want to learn more about ways you can help, look for the next THON meeting in your Mont Alto Activities Calendar. Re- member, every little bit counts.
