It was an all-out battle at the Penn State Mont Alto MAC building
when a tough Brandywine came into town on January 19" to play our
Penn State Mont Alto men’s basketball team, three games into MA's win-
ning streak. Mont Alto's Mitchell and Onyneaka were unstoppable on the
backboards, pulling down 11 rebounds each. The team was on as a unit,
too, sinking ten 3-pointers. Head Coach Flory gives the credit to extra
shooting drills in practice, and a passing game that leads to a good distri-
bution of the ball. This passing game got the ball in the hands of some
new stars. Freshman Bowie and sophomore Bowens really stepped up in
a big way, scoring a combined 19 points. Newman proved he was the
right man to take point by earning 18 points and 7 assists. The offense
was effective because the Mont Alto boys also played good defense.
Mitchell had 2 steals, and Onyneaka had 3 blocks.
Controversy struck with only about four minutes left in the game, as a ==
controversial call had Coach Flory and a referee exchanging words. The _
referee ejected Flory from the game, and the home crowd was irate. Bran-
dywine's number 11, Hagerty, walked up to the foul line after the tech-
nical foul, and under a loud Mont Alto crowd sunk all four free throws,
tying the game. As Brandywine ran to the sideline cheering, Mont Alto
gathered together under new leader Micah Gingrich. That is when Mont
Alto came strong and simply outplayed Brandywine for 4 minutes, win-
ning 87-81. After the game fans did not seem disappointed with Coach
Flory for giving the referee a piece of his mind; many claim it was the
spark that led to the win. After the game Coach Flory said, “They were
riding our guards and fouling our big man all game, and we couldn't get a
call.” It wasn't enough to prevent number four in a row for our boys, and Mont Alto men’s basketball extends its winning streak
we only expect more.
