Page 8 Information Fall 2009 Google.com At last, the long wait is over and the Environmental Club is back after several years of not being an active club at Penn State Mont Alto. Global warming, deforestations, pol- lutions, climate change, those are just some of the problems that the Earth. and its inhabi- tants face today. With the willingness and the passion for the envi- ronment by the students and with the help of their club ad- visor, Dr. Linghao Zhong, they revive the Environmental Club. I interviewed Dr. Zhong and asked him how he became interested in reviving the club, he said “I grew up in China and I have seen how the envi- ronment there deteriorates while the economy booms. Although the Chinese govern- ment has realized the situation, the awareness in the general public lags behind. I don't want see this happens here.” The Environmental Club is still seeking for interested stu- dents to join the club. With the support and consent of the Penn State Mont Alto campus, they will be planning to make ~ the campus greener by going to several alternative power plants near Pennsylvania and try to study what will be the best option of alternative en- ergy at Mont Alto, whether will it be solar. wind. or geo- thermal. We’ll find out after the trips. One of the other plans of the group is to invite some environmental speakers and such as: An Inconvenient Truth, 11" hour, and Flow to spread ‘environmental aware- ness to all the students and be more concerned to our fragile environment. This will also help them realize on how seri- ous our problem with the envi- ronment is. According to Dr. Zhong “the main focus of this club is to promote the Reduce, Reuse, Recycle philosophy” “and Renewable” added by the club advisor. In this and the following semesters, club members will hop on buses for several trips (also open to all students) to renewable energy facilities, such as wind farm, building using solar energy, and etc. A discussion of the best renewable energy option npa-Teuoissejorduediey] for Mont Alto campus will be held afterwards. The final con- clusion will be presented to the campus administrations. Workshops on biodiesel, solar PV projects will be carried out. Speakers will be invited to give seminars and explain to students the reality that we are currently facing. : Joining forces with nongovernmental organiza- tions like the Greenpeace Stu- dent Network will be a good measure to fight for the envi- ronment. This network is armed with organizing tools, guidance, and training system to make a real enormous force to fight global warming. On their previous activities, Greenpeace with several uni- versities across the United States joined forces to pressure the biggest tissue company and well known makers of Kleenex, Kimberly-Clark, on taking a good substantial step to protect ancient forests. After five years of campaigning against Kimberly Clark. For the members of the Environmental Club, it is not too late to save the environ- ment. Anyone can save. the environment wherever you are, whatever you do has and will affect our planet. It’s not too late to show care for our planet. A great man one said “Be the change you wish to see in the world.” Those are the words of Mahatma Gandhi. Let us not wait for the others, let us act now, let us act to- gether, and we will surely make a difference that the fu- ture generation will surely benefit from. Google.com
