themselves.”
As aresult of media frenzy, Jones
and Maroclo both began to receive
numerous calls and e-mails
regarding the situation. Both Penn
State students have acknowledged
receiving comprehensive death
threats stemming from their
actions.
Jones told of one Virginia Tech
student’s threat that was received
by Maroclo. The threat included
an outline to run her, Maroclo, over
with a bus, and then “put her teeth
on the sidewalk and kick her head.”
“I would not show my face on
the Virginia Tech campus now.
They might actually murder me.
Apparently, violence is the
answer” said Jones, further
commenting on the personal
attacks.
In response to these threats,
Sgt. John Wilson of the State
College Police Department
acknowledged that any possible
threat would be investigated and
brought forward to the
University’s Judicial Affairs Office.
Jones recently spoke on the
phone with a Roanoke, Virginia
television station, WSLS. He
alleged that the costume was not
supposed to be funny but instead
proceeded to answer, “...it’s that
we are notorious and infamous in
the state college, so we have to do
things that push the envelope just
for shock value.”
After the interview with the
television station, Jones claimed he
was misconstrued and never
understood the interview would be
made public; if so, he would have
been weighed his words more
carefully about the subject.
His interviewer, Lindsey Henley,
a reporter at the station and recent
2007 Virginia Tech graduate,
responded with, “The first thing I
said is that I’m recording this
know what part of that he didn’t
understand. I think that’s a cop-out
personally.”
Amidst the anger and fallout of
these actions, students have not
The Collegian reported that Virginia
Tech student Caitlin Beckett, said,
“You would think that people, after
what happened, would have more
respect than that.”
Beckett concluded that, “...even
if it happened after five years, it
wouldn’t be OK.”
Other Virginia Tech students
have made such comments as, ...I
and my fellow Hokies are insulted
by these individuals’ actions, I hope
we can put things into perspective.”
Another quoted, “I didn’t think
that would ever happen from any
community. I didn’t think anyone
would make light of the subject.”
Penn State students themselves
are accusing their colleagues of
making an ill decision and labeling
the subject, “...not a thing to joke
about.”
One Penn State student even
went far enough to say, “If I was at
Virginia Tech, I would hate Penn
State for life.”

cold. Interviews with students,
including those who live at the
residences cited in the article,
found them being disregarded by
the article. The article states that
the students could not be reached
for comment.
The problem with that
statement lies in two distinct
issues. Penn State policy, as
reported by Holly Cieri, does not
allow the University to give out
student names in issues like this.
The other very possible reason is
that the reporter did not want the
opinions of students. Students
were not even contacted, yet their
addresses are listed, therefore the
Public Opinion clearly knew where
the students were and could be
contacted.
In fact there were citizens that
sided with the students, but their
responses were not quoted in the
front page article of the Public
Opinion’s Sunday paper.
“Overreaction” is the general
reply by most students to the torts
of the community.
The student body must remain
understanding. Whilst the article
in the Public Opinion is fairly
biased, so is the reaction of the
students at large. Admittance to
the problems stated in the article
were prevalent among most of the
students interviewed.
Parties with underage drinking
occur on a large scale in campus
communities, so is a small town like
Mont Alto to blame for lacking a
police force to enforce the mores?
Can the Public Opinion be blamed
few ramifications found?
The course taken by the
University is to become more
connected with Mont Alto,
committee by Chancellor Gnage
that will be made up of
administrators, faculty, students,
and townspeople.
This type of organization, as
found in many college towns, will
hope to bridge the gap between the
students and the community.
Nonetheless, any reader will be
hard pressed to find that kind of
positive press in the Public
Opinion, especially not on the front
page.
