Dancing is a form of sleeping, or otherwise resting yourself—sit with you? Could you do it? Would you want to do it? Well, believe it or not, many people have volunteered to do this on a yearly basis. This annual gathering I speak of is the Penn State Dance Marathon, or THON for short, in which dancers representing various organizations and individuals, in cooperation with the Four Diamonds Fund, gather after a period of vigorous fundraising for children with cancer. The Four Diamonds Fund was created in 1972 in order to raise money for children diagnosed with cancer at the Penn State Children’s Hospital in Hershey, PA. The Dance Marathon at Penn State started in 1973, originally as a competition in which the proceeds were split between that year’s dancing winners and a charity chosen as the beneficiary for that particular year. In 1977, THON donated to the Four Diamonds Fund and the following year saw a permanent partnership develop between the two. The combination has been unstoppable ever since. THON, now the largest student-run philanthropy in the world, has since raised over $46 million for children with cancer. How does this all relate to our campus here at Mont Alto? Well, our campus happens to have its own chapter of THON looking for Diamonds Fund. support from whoever is willing. There are many contributions, both direct and indirect, that one can make to this organization, from canning to running the THON 5k race to dancing at the climactic dance marathon. If you. are interested in contributing to the Mont Alto Chapter, you can shoot an e-mail to Joseph Maiello at jom5062@psu.edu. Ifyou are just interested in a general contribution to THON or simply want to check the organization itself out, you can do so at www.thon.org. Please offer your help, in any way you can, big or small. It takes just a few small steps to begin a long journey and no organization exemplifies this better than the Penn State Dance Marathon. ~The Fourth Wall Student Newspaper Staff would like to personally thank Penn State Mont Alto and the Student Ac- tivity Fund Committee.
