page 6 The Fourth Wall Truth from page 3 segments of biology out of context and makes claims that it is proof of an intelligent creator, as if there aren’t Biologists out there to fill in the facts that are consistently missing. Also, Creationism makes no pretenses about the fact that it is faith- based, which immediately throws it out of the scientific running. So in steps ID, as the science mask to Creationism. Intelligent Design insists it makes no claim as to exactly who this intelligent designer is. With that said, here are a few rarely mentioned facts about Intelligent Design. The theory called Intelligent Design came about with the publication of a book called Darwin on Trial by Phillip Johnson (1991) in which he planted the seeds for his “Wedge Strategy.” Johnson is an advisor to the Center for the Renewal of Science and Culture (CRSC), the biggest proponent of ID being taught in schools, and many of its members are the same scientists who are providing the proof of ID. One such scientist, for example, is Dr. Jonathon Wells, who holds PhD’s in both Molecular/ Cellular Biology and Religious Studies from Yale. Wells is the author of the book Icons of Evolution, which is clearly the basis for the lesson plan adopted by the Ohio State Board of Education in 2004, proposing a line of questioning be put to the validity of Evolution that neither Creationism nor ID could possibly stand up under. This man has been quoted as saying that he strove for both Yale degrees specifically “to devote [his] life to destroying Darwinism.” This position doesn’t reflect a desire to place ID on equal footing with Evolution or to share a stage with Evolutionism. What makes me nervous are “The Wedge Strategy” and its Five and Twenty-Year Plans (for more information: http:// www.antievolution.org/ features/wedge.html). The Five-Year Plan includes the desire “to see intelligent design theory as an accepted alternative in the sciences and scientific research being done from the perspective of design theory,” and “to see major new debates in education, life issues, legal and personal responsibility pushed to the front of the national agenda.” This is being done now with the current debate as to whether or not ID should be taught in schools, and is enjoying a certain amount of success given the recent turn of events in Dover. The Twenty-Year Plan in “The Wedge Strategy” seeks to “see intelligent design theory as the dominant perspective in science,” “To see design theory application in specific fields, including molecular biology, biochemistry, paleontology, physics and cosmology in the natural sciences, psychology, ethics, politics, theology and philosophy in the humanities; to see its influence in the fine arts,” and “to see design theory permeate our religious, cultural, moral and political life.” While the Five-Year Plan seems innocent enough, their Twenty- Year Plan is far from innocent, and goes way beyond a quest for equality. The debate in the courts today is not simply about giving students a choice, when viewed against the dominating backdrop of The Wedge’s Twenty-Year Plan. Who are these Center for the Renewal Of Science and Culture folks? The CRSC falls under the Discovery Institute, whose “essential readings” include both the books of Wells and Johnson. Furthermore, in addition to deliberately hiding behind the false intentions of equality, the Discovery Institute whole-heartedly pushes their “teach the controversy” method. This was specifically constructed to dance around the Edwards v. Aguillard case that in 1987 struck down a law in Louisiana that required the teaching of Creation Science, based on the grounds that it violates the First Amendment, which states “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.” Note the part that says, “Shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion.” So, while everyone bickers over what is and is not a theory, what qualifies as a “science,” and what is fair, balanced and equal, few people outwardly question the motives of these two opposing groups. And what are the motives of science other than to discover and learn and to record and correlate facts, while at the same time never actually claming to know the Truth (hence why there are so many theories in science and few actual laws)? Creationism, which underhandedly hides behind the false front of Intelligent Design, claims to know what nobody knows. For proponents, their belief is the Truth. It’s hard to find a sinister motive behind science’s advancements, since it doesn’t go out of its way to prove anyone's religious beliefs wrong, and it’s definitely not trying to force its way into churches. Creationism, the Discovery Institute, the CRSC and The Wedge, on the other hand, are quite transparent in their order of business. Attention should be brought to this matter and supporters of Design Theory should be forced to put all of their cards on the table. Only then can we truly debate whether or not Intelligent Design should be allowed in our schools. Music Review: My Chemical Romance Chris Santos For the last few years, Jersey’s own My Chemical Romance has been dominating the scene with their blend of pop/punk/emo sound. The name of the band derives from a genre of novels made popular by Irving Welsh (“Trainspotting”) called “chemical romances”. Frontman Gerard Way holds a powerful presence on stage, from his intense gestures to his unique, abstract lyrics. MCR pays homage to their influences in a variety of music ranging from “The Smiths” to “The Misfits.” Their music is a refreshing change from the generic p op punk sound that has beenon | heavy | rotation for the past few years. 2002’s “I brought you my bullets, you brought me your love” electrified the underground scene with such heart wrenching songs as “Cubicles”, “Our: Lady of Sorrows”, and the well known “Vampires Will Never Hurt You.” Their second release, “Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge,” presents a more Don’t be fooled though...the sh exe gts inspirational energy that put MCR on the map remains.
