HAZLETON COLLEGIAN Weekly Newsletter Edition The Pennsylvania State University Center Highacres Hazleton, Pennsylvania ?ol XVII No. 13 /. \ /0 Do you know what anniversary we hffl on Tuesday? Well, if you do, you're better than the majority of people around Highacres, I was startled at the number of people who didn't remember that on December 7, the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor, bringing the United States into World War 11, If so many people at Highacres do not remember this date, perhaps it is true that the American people, as a whole, are forgetting it. Of course, it might seem unimportant to remember this date, the war is over. Japan is now our ally and a vital one at that. Why bear a grudge? I'm not saying that we should remember Pearl Harbor to work up antagonism against Japan, or that we should bear, a grudge, but if we forget what happened on December 7, 19itl, we might forget the lesson that it taught, or should have taught the American people. Be prepared| The destruction at Pearl Harbor, many experts tell us, could have been averted if we had realized our danger and been prepared. Today the lesson of Pearl Harbor is more vital than ever. We can not afford to underestimate Russia and Communist China as we once underestimated Japan, We can't afford- to let down our defenses or to be deceived by talks of peace from an enemy who means little of what he says. We can't afford to forget Pearl Harbor and the lesson it taught• "Fifty per-cent of all married persons are women."
