February 26, 1954 NAT‘fES AROUND CAMPUS Everyone will agree that a name is a mighty important part of a person. It would certainly be discouraging and confusing to go through life answering only to "hey, you," or some similar address. However, even if names are used, especially first names alone, quite a bit of confusion can result, as this reporter proved by an investigation into the first names of the students on our campus. For example, a note to "Dear John" would create quite an amount of difficulty at Highacres, since there are nineteen men named John enrolled here this semester. "So whatl" says Miss X, "my campus beau's a guy named Joe. Can't get mixed up there." That's what she thinks. There areeleven Joseph's on campus. When she says she's in love with Joe, which one does she mean? When someone yells for Bob, Tom, or Bill, there is also a guess as to who will answer, because we have at Highacres eleven Robert's, eight Thomas's, and seven William's. There are also six Paul's and five Michael's. However, there is only one each of Bruce, Lee, Hugh, Gale, Adrian, Philip, Keith, Mauro, Art, and Glenn. Altogether, there are sixty—five different boys' names represented at Highacres. Take your pick, girls. Although every" Tom, Dick, and Harry" seems to be called John, every Jill and Jane seems to be called Mary, We hae this semester eight Mary's, in cluding names with Mary in them, such as Maryann. Nancy and Evelyn each belong to two Highacres co-eds. The rest of the twenty-one different girls' names found in the center directory belong to only one girl each. Maybe, after all this talk about names, you're curious as to what they mean. Well, next week in this column, you will find the meanings of some of the more popular first names at Highacres, SORORITY The Theta Sigma Pi Sorority held its first business meeting of the spring semester last ThurSday evening with President Harriet Tulin presiding. Mary Donish was elected secretary, and Mary Ann Tassel was accepted into the sorority by a formal initiation. After secret pals were picked out of a hat (which, incidentally, was Mary's (Donish) red tam), there was a discussion of the sorority's social activities for the spring semester. FLSH FROM THE BOOKSTORE The new Philosophy and Psychology books are in. Anyone who needs them can pick up the textbooks at the bookstore* For those hardworking Spanish students who are still minus a needed text book, here is a word of hope. The book hasn't come in yet, but there are hopes, so don't give up. The time is coming for them to arrive. HAZ LET ON COLLEGIAN Page 2
