February 19, 1953 «EN GARDE" The Fencing Club has begun activities under the instruction of Captain Walter Carper, The first lessons were given to the coed members on February 17 in the cafeteria# The fundamentals taught were the salute, proper handling of the foils, the en garde and lunging positions. All who attended were enthusiastic and are look ing forward to the next meeting, which will be held fifth period, today in South Hall 101# If you’re interested don’t forget it’s not too late to join the fencing club* STUDENT COUNCIL Student Council held its weekly meeting Wednesday, fifth period# The follow ing points v?ere discussed: 1, The first business which arose concerned the R 0 T C ball deficit# Mr# Mattern reported that the Student-Faculty Board suggested that the need ed money be taken from the money made on the booklet# The Board also suggest ed that the ROTC ball be an all-college affair. The Student Council then took action upon the issue and decided to allow ROTC to pay the bill from the money made on the booklet# The Council felt that an earnest effort must be made to replace the money taken out, Council felt that ROTC made an earnest effort to follow its budget, but they had some trouble because the orchestra which was originally asked to play at the dance had disbanded# 2* Captain Carper informed the Council that he would print and sell some of the pictures taken at the ball and in this way a part of the money taken out of the fund from the booklet could be paid, 3# Bob Tomsho felt that students not oh Council should be active on the traffic committee, because the fact that only Council members are on the committee leads to criticism. Jack Ciocca, who resigned from the traffic committee becuase of other duties, was succeeded by Nick Pelick, Captain Carper also reported that he would make an ifficiency report once a month concerning the traffic committee, U# Bill Coll came before the Council and asked it it would be able to give additional funds to the fencing club* The main reason for this was that forty-five students had joined the club, and there was not a sufficient supply of foils and masks, Andy Karpinski, president, asked Bill to ask Mr, Peightal of the Athletic Committee if it would be possible to procure additional equipment, Andy also asked Bill to return to the next Council meeting and report his progress# 5# The Social Committee, which consists of fourteen members of the student body, was approved, and Bob Tomsho reported that it is already making up the social calendar# 6# Andy Karpinski asked all members to write down an amendment* which each thought should be added to the constitution. This amendment will deal with the Council membership and mil be acted upon at the next meeting# * The constitution has a provision which provides for its amendingi These amendments may be initiated by either the Council or members of the student body. If any member of the student body has an idea as to the form or word ing of this amendment, the Council will greatly appreciate his or her help# You have the power to start an amendment} therefore, don’t criticize the Council for amendments which don't suit you, when you are the one responsible for the constitution.
