Sophomore Vice President John Riley College Council Officers Take Over The newly-elected College Council of HUC held its first meeting of the year, on October 20', 1947. Frank Lucia, who was elected last week as Sophomore President, was installed as Council President. Elec ted to serve under him were Bernard Dvorscak as Vice-President, Jane Kenvin as Secretary, and James Fischer as Treasurer. The Council's representative to the Student Activi ties Board is Irene Smith. The Council passed a motion whereby several Hazleton people (to be chosen later) will be admitted as honorary members of the Council, to have the same privileges as students at ,HUC. HUC Students In Community Theatre When the Hazleton Little Theatre presented a one-act play, "Direct Mail", •at the regular meeting at the YWCA building on Thursday eve ning, the Hazleton Undergraduate Center was well represented in the program. Clarence "Duke" •Sipple, Sophomore Class Treasurer, played the leading role, and the supporting cast included the following HUC stu dents: Eugene Bogdon, Wilbur Smith, Daniel Alampi and John Perna. Gedige Gorda, who also at tends HUC, served as master of cer emonies for the program. The same men are working on committees for the Little Theatre's forthcoming production of "The Family Upstairs" a three act comedy to be presented on November sixth, at the , Grebey Memorial Auditorium. Included in the cast of this major production is Albert Christie, also a student of HUC. Geology Class Visits Penna Crystal Cave Mr. Zerbe's geology class made a trip on Tuesday afternoon to Crystal Cave, Pa., where they enjoyed an in teresting tour through the cave. The guide helped add color to his explan atory remarks by an effective use of his Pennsylvania Dutch accent. The cave was found in 1871 when a group of men accidently discovered it while blasting for limestone. Geol ogosts believe that the cave was formed in the glacial period, many years ago, when rushing water washed away the loose strata. The trip was made by automobile with six cars leaving from the Wal nut :Street Building at 1:00 p.m. Prior to departure, a member of the Ha zleton Police Department halted highway traffic, making it possible for the group to leave together. Thespians Presented On October 17th at 8:00 P.M. the Penn State Thespians of HUC pre sented a half-hour program in con junction with "Pennsylvania Week" over WAZL. The HUC Glee Club and the Dramatics Club highlighted great events in American history which took place in Pennsylvania. Richard Evans and Leroy Hinkle were fea tured soloists for the broadcast. A recording was. made of the broa,dAast and will be sent to the Penn State iCampus. Final rehearsal of the Glee Club was conducted by Miss Garbrick on Wednesday for the WAZL broadcast on October 30th. Although election of officers has not been held, Miss Garbrick has ap pointed Bernard Dvorscak to be tem porary representative to the Student Government. Marolo Re-elected German Club Pres. At a meeting of the German Club on October 16th; Samuel Marolo was re-elected president. The following officers were elected to assist the president: Jeanne Uzmann, Vice President; Doris Bartol, Secretary; John Hutnyan, Treasurer; Walter Steinman, Representative to Student Activities; Gene Kostick, Reporter to the Collegian. Plans were advanced to reserve a table once a week in a local restau rant, where German students may eat. The time and place will be an nounced in the next edition of the Collegian. Miss Erlemann began pre paration on a skit to be presented at the next meeting of the German Club. The participants will be mem bers of the German Club. Miss Phillips sta- HAZL'ETON COLLEGIAN Half Hour Show Submit , Cartoons To Hazleton Collegian All students desiring to have their cartoons and sketches published in the Hazleton Collegian must submit their copy at least one week before date of publication. Hand in your sketches in the following manner: 1. Make sketch in BLACK INK. 2. Submit sketches on regular theme paper (81 x 11 inches). 3. Sketches must be 41inches wide by 4i inches long. 4. Please sign your name at the bottom of each sketch; the right hand corner is usually the best place. 5. Please DO NOT submit more than one sketch on each sheet of paper. The subject matter for these car toons is not limited. If you want to do a cartoon on some of the incidents that happen at HUC, go right ahe.i. Mathematics Club Under Coburn-Zerbe On October 20th the Mathematics Club met and elected the following members to club offices: Paul Wen sko, President; Bernard Frye, Vice President; and Gladys Lorah, Secre tary. Mr. Coburn took a referendum vote on choice subjects the .club wished to discuss. The following list is the order in which these topics will be presented: Fundamentals of algebra; the slide rule; mathematical short cuts; elements of calculus; and mathematical oddities. At the meet ing of October 27th the discussion of factoring was continued by Mr. Zerbe, who is the new advisor of the club. All students who had or are taking at least college algebra are invited to attend the next meeting of the club and to become members. STAMP CLUB EXTENDS INVITATION TO * HUC The Hazleton Stamp Club extends to all students of HUC interested in stamp collecting an invitation to at tend meetings held in the chess room of the YMCA. The meetings are held the second and fourth Thursday of every month. Lectures, auctions and joint meet ings with the Tamaqua Club make up the Stamp Club's program. The office of vice-president is held by Carl Hill, a member of the HUC student body, ted that elections for club officers will be held in the near future. After the elections the club's president will appoint a program committee for the forth-coming year and a constitution will be drawn up. Fresh Vice President Richard Waechter Photography Club Instructions Start On October 20th the Photography Club elected Paul Polivka executive head. After Mr. Polivka was installed in a brief ceremony, Mr. Levine in structed the club members in devel oping and printing. On October 30th the club held its second meeting. Mr. Levine ve ex tensive instruction on enlarging equipment and the process of enlarg ing. It was also decided that mem:ber ship for the club is still open and anyone interested in joining is asked to contact Mr. Levine. Mr. Levine also wishes to an nounce that the darkroom is now open to members of the Photography Club anytime during the day. NO NEW BUILDING DEVELOPMENT AS YET There are still no developments on new buildings to house the Hazleton Undergraduate Center of Penn State. According to an interview afforded by a staff reporter with Mr. Amos Goss it was stated that the new buil ding plans will "just slide along" be cause there are too many other im portant matters pressing.
