HAZLETON COLLEGIAN RUC SPORTS HUC CAGEMEN OPEN PRACTICE DRILLS FOR COMING SEASON By , CHARLES MAURER On Monday the HUC basketball team began its first practice for the coming season. The turnout was large and very •promising. Returning from last year's Eastern Junior Col legiate champions were J. Riley, R. Saul, J. Riordan, N. Polum•bo and J. Munroe. These men and other lead ing contenders such as T. Strike, P. Garber, 'T. Shuptar, B. Martin, S. Laganosky, S. Talarovich, J. Hut nyan and H. Narusewicz are all aspi rants for starting berths. There are many more promising basketeers worthy of note but too numerous to mention. The competition is keen. The team has been practicing at least two or three times a week at the A. D. Thomas gym and are smoo thing over the rough edges. The boys have had heated scrimmages against outstanding independent teams from Weatherly, Freeland and Berwick. The team will work out with the Bloomsburg S.T.C. squad Tuesday. Coach Syd Rudman has arranged for the 'HUC schedule home and away games with the following ju nior colleges: Altoona, Dußois, Her shey, Keystone, Pottsville, Swarth more and York. Additional contests will be arranged as the season pro gresses. Participation in the state championship tournament will be de termined by the league standing at the close of the season. At present the jay-vee schedule consists of six games already slated with additional games tentative. SPORTSTUFF The HUC intra-mural basketball league got off to a fine start Monday afternoon when the Rockets and the Atomic Bums clashed on the hard wood of the local YMCA SYD RUDMAN, athletic director, wishes to thank all persons who made the formation of this fine circuit possible —The success of the loop depends on all participants getting to the games at the scheduled time—Back to foot ball, it' looks as if the Penn State eleven will come through this current football season unbeaten and untied —ln toppling West Virginia, The Nittany Lions overcame one of their biggest threats of the season—The final score was close but did you take notice to the statistics?—lncidental ly, our BUD PALMER figured in the defeat of Syracuse two weeks ago. In the final period of the fray, Bud scampered 25 yards on a lateral from Rogel to score one of the touchdowns. Has anyone noticed how well Julius FRANZOSA looks lately? We are inclined to think that the returns on Aaron Deitch, in addition to serving as manager of intra-mural athletics, has taken over the duties of junior varsity manager. Conclusive evidence indicates that this year's quintet will be potentially stronger than last year's squad. Watch these boys. "They're going places." Speaking of sports reminds us that JACK MacMILLAN has a sharp green sport jacket for sale—lf you plan to visit Pimlico, Delaware Park, Suffolk Downs (Mass.), or Aqueduct, your wardrobe will not be complete without a jacket like MacMillan's— Anyone interested in purchasing it may contact Jack by dropping in at Emmett's any morning except Sun day, at 9 o'clock. We wish to thank STAN CAU GHEY and SID BENJAMIN of the local daily newspapers for the plugs they gave us in last week's, papers— If you haven't been a reader of their sports columns, look them over. They unfold some very interesting infor mation of local and national interest. Our congratulations to AARON DEITCH who was recently appointed intra-mural athletics manager of the Jay-vee basketball squad.
