Sports Review LAST YEAR WAS A BANNER ONE FOR HUC Why? Well, let's look at the record Varsity Basketball Winner of the Eastern Pennsylva nia Junior College Championship and runner-up for the State !Champion ship. Varsity Swimming Runner-up for the state champion ship, capturing titles in the diving and 220 yd. free-style relay events. Varsity Tennis There was 'no team championship, but Capt. Jimmy Howells won the sin gles , championship, and our doubles team was defeated_in the semi-final round. Varsity Golf Our team placed fourth in the state championships, with Capt. Jack Specht placing third 'for 'individual honors. This year there is every hope for and .possibility of duplicating or bet tering the feats of the past year. Of course the strength of a team is large ly determined by the relative strength of the oppositiOn, and it ap pears that almost all of the opposing teams will be considerably stronger this year. If our sports representa tives display the cooperation and de termination exemplified by our past performers, then we may anticipate what may be the most successful year in sports ever to have been reached by H.U.C. One essential for the success of our team is the loyal support of our fol lowers as shown by their interest and cooperation. If you cannot be a par ticipant, be a good supporter of our teams! PLANING EXTENSIVE ATHLETIC PROGRAM During the academic year it is the desire of the athletic department to carry on an extensive intramural ath letic program. Two things stand like stone:— Kindness is another's trouble, Courage is your own. —YE WEARY WAYFARER HAZLETON COLLEGIAN THE PLAY OF THE YEAR By Jack Riley Capt. HUC Basketball Team An outstanding and intricate bas ketball play is difficult to explain, es pecially on paper; but in my book, the laurels for the basketball play of the year go to Al Durback and Johnny )Appichella, two great team workers on the IHUC Eastern Conference championship squad. The play I have in mind occurred in a game played at Williamsport be tween HUC and Dickinson J. C., and though the Dickinson team beat us al most as decisively as we beat them on our home court, the Appichella-Dur back play was the best of the game and of the season, as far as I am con cerned. Durback, taking the ball out under Dickinson's hoop, wound up and heaved a `,`football pass" the length of the Williamsport High School court (which is one of the largest in the state) to the fast moving Appi chella. Appy's timing was perfect! Just a foot ahead of his guard he grabbed the ball, pivoted and dropped the ball through the hoop for two more points. The play was executed so swiftly that there was . a stunned, silence for a moment before the spectators roared their approval. I think it will be a long time before I see a basketball play to rival the one executed by Johnny Appichella and Al Durback. John Carr, instructor in chemistry, presided at this meeting and ex planed to the new teachers the pur pose of the faculty club and outlined some of the projects he hoped staff members would take an interest in during the 1947-48 school year. It was proposed that officers be elected for the fall term, but this idea was rejected when it was decided that club officers should be elected at the next meeting, to be held Friday. Eearlier in the day, Ralph Krecker,. assistant professor of economics, outlined the duties of student coun sellors and answered faculty mem bers' questions concerning this sub ject. The assistant administrative head of the Center, Richard J. Mattern, acted as general chairman of all the meetings held during the day. The faculty week program will end Sunday at 8 p. m. at which time re gistration procedure will be discussed and faculty assignment made for freshman week. Smoking is not permitted in the library. At evening meetings held in this room the rule is relaxed, but dur ing the day, smoking is prohibited in the library. PLEASE NOTE AND REMEMBER.
