C. to the tune of 73-59. Apichella opened the night's scor ing with a field goal, but the score was tied up, 2-2, when Rees dumped in a two-pointer. As the quarter ended !HUG' lead by a five-ipoint margin, 15- 10. Krankowsky and Fisher paced the visitors' second half spurt, and the lower-enders led, 29-27, at the close of the half. However, Pottsville wilted under a 46 point barrage in the last half, and HUC romped off to an easy victory. High scorer for the locals was John Riley who registered 11 field goals and 2 charity tosses for 24 points. Right behind,Riley for scoring honors was Johnny Apichella who accounted for 21 tallies. The Hazleton Undergraduate Cen ter's courtmen returned to their win ning ways by handing a scrappy Scranton U. Junior Varsity a 54-49 defeat. A well-balanced attack headed by Munroe, Apichella and Riordan, who found the hoop for 11 counters apiece proved too much for the home club. HUC hopped off to a 15-6 lead in the 'first period and was never in seri •ous trouble until the last quarter when' Scranton flashed a rally that dropped six points short of a victory. Riley, a Navy veteran, has com piled an impressive scoring record during the past cage season. MMI Hands HUC Blush-Provoking 70-60 Setback On Thursday, Feb. 27, HUC lost a 70-60 decision to a smooth-working, fast-breaking M.M.I. quintet from Freeland. 7 41 Inability to stop Tommy Breslin, Mining's all-regional forward who ran wild for 26 points, proved fatal for the locals. Breslin and Sabel paced the Prep, pers' first period attack, while Riley and Apichella led HUC's slight offen sive. The first canto ended with MMI out in front, 12-16. In the second quarter, Apichella, Riley and Jimmy Munroe helped cut the Freelanders' lead to 27-26, as the half drew to a close. In the third frame Mining stretched their lead via shots by Breslin, Madden and Eckrote. Mun roe and Ray Williams sparked a last quarter offensive which fell short and MR walked off with a 70-60 triumph. High scorer of the evening was lit tle Tommy Breslin, who played a whale of a game, and also chalked up 26 points. C. quintet lost their third straight game at the hands of Bucknell J.C., 60-44, on Friday e vening, February 28th. Johns, the county-seaters' burly guard, scored ten points while holding down Riley, HUC's leading point- pro ducer, to a pair of field goals. Riordan and Durback led the locals' weak first period offensive, while Gil roy, Harvey and Swartwood starred for the visitors. At the end of the first canto, HUIC trailed, 14-11. The upper enders held Hazleton to four points in the second stanza while Gilroy, Swartwood and Johns banged in field goal after field goal to increase their margin to 28-15. In Finale, 46-44 The 'Hazleton Undergraduate Cen ter's cage squad brought their regu larly-scheduled basketball season to a close on Monday evening by nosing out a classy Scranton University Ju nior Varsity, 46-44. The game was fought tooth and nail and the lead changed hands sev eral times. At the end of the first pe riod, 'HUC held a narrow one-point margin. At half time the visitors knotted the count, 25-25. At the end of the third quarter both teams had dropped in twelve counters and the score stood at a deadlock again, 37- 37. The last stanza was tied up 44-44 and with 30 seconds to go Johnny Ri ley let go a sensational long shot from the center of the court to give Hazleton the ball game.
