I Advice to Bookworms
1" 1 —-- ———
We (that is, the author of this col
umn) get a break this issue; we’re
going to be read by the freshmen for
a change. Why ? Because we’re going
to discuss those books which must be
reviewed in Eng. Comp. s—that is,
the few we’ve read.
If any of these books have poten
tialities of enriching the student’s
viewpoint of life, we may offer Lincoln
Steffen’s autobiography. The width of
the book may be discouraging; but
once you catch the breadth of the ma
terial therein you will wish there were
more pages to it.
Edith Warthon’s “Ethan Frome”
should be read by practical freshmen
for this reason: it’s a short cut to an
enjoyable novel. The length of the
story is very inviting and the tale of
poor Ethan Frome is very stirring. He
is one character who has attained im
mortality in our minds—thanks to
Miss Yotter’s Eng. Comp. 5 course.
Equally as inviting is Sherwood
Anderson’s “Winesburg, Ohio,” a
gathering of short intimate stories
concemihg characters in the small
burg of Winesburg.
Some of the stories are rather snap
py (the old trick that Mr. Eiche and
Mr. Janessen have worn out in getting
students to read.)
For the more serious readers, Savitz
for instance, we offer Henry Seidel
Canby’s description of scholastic life
in the early 1900 s. His book is schol
arly yet written so as to interest any
earnest student.
Five to one odds that Mr. Eiche will
stand on his head before semester’s
end while casting pearls to the Eng
lish Literateurs.

MRS. JANSSEN SINGS FOR
COSMOPOLITAN CLUB
The Cosmopolitan Club had, as
guest of honor at one of its early
meetings, Mrs. H. Janssen who gave
an educational survey of German
music through a thousand years. Mrs.
Janssen was very proficient in playing
the lute, upon which she accompanied
herself. The lute which was brought
from Germany recently by Mrs. Jans
sen is one of the six in the United
States made by a famous German
craftsman.
At the next meeting of the Club, Mr.
Michael Curilla, had as a guest Pro
fessor Andrew Morris, who sang
several Russian songs. Professor Mor
ris had a very magnetic voice which
was very expressive.

There are six stages in the life of a
woman: —the infant, the little girl,
the miss, the young woman, the young
woman, and the young woman.
** * *
Ye Autoists take heed:—
Check the wheel—make sure that a
loose nut isn’t holding it.
Make sure that the Miss in the
motor is sitting beside you.
Make certain that the only crank in
the car is in the tool box.
See that the hand on the gearshift
is your own.
The gas tank should be filled with
fluid, not the man that drives the car.
