Dr. Dorothy Cotton Visits Hazleton Campus
Byt Janiea D. Hayes & Ban Turrano
On Monday evening January 18, Dr. Dorothy
Cotton, of Cornell University, spoke to an
attentive group of Penn State students, faculty,
and staff in room 115 of the Evelyn Graham
Academic Center here on campus. Dr. Martin
Luther King Jr.’s colleague, who joined us in
celebration of his birth and his dream, posed the
question: "Will you be prepared for the job that
lies ahead?"
Dr. Dorothy Cotton, returning from a
breakfast in the South, spoke to a crowd of eager
listeners about her various experiences and gave
new insights to all present through recallections
of her childhood and her young adulthood living
in the "whites only" south. During her
awe-inspiring talk she emphasized that anyone
with a passion toward problem areas in our
society can make a difference and she also
offered suggestions to help enable one to become
a leader. Some of the events in her life that she
had so eloquently related to us, almost seemed
incomprehensible to many of the young listeners
who had been bom after the turbulent sixties.
Four students from the Hazleton Campus
opened the program with a song entitled "Lift
Every Voice and Sine", along with a reading by
Janice Hayes, one of the featured singers. The
other student performers included Micheal
Brewster, Shirley Jackson, and Lori White.
During the emotionally uplifting presentation,
some members of the audience were holding back
a few tears or chuckling hardily at the clever
quips that Dr. Cotton included in her speech.
Between the opening remark: "Did you all
forget to pay your heating bill here?", an obvious
reference to the heating, (or lack there of) in
some of our buildings down to the last clap and
thank you; she tried to give us the mental tools so
that we could be prepared for the future and told
us to take some initative and do things without
being told to . Many observers remarked as they

left the room that they felt a renewed sense of
direction and purpose in life. Quite a
complement to the person who was so
inspirational in a lecture that only lasted slightly
more than an hour, that one might be forced to
wonder what direction society would take if
more people were like this vibrant leader.
After returning to Hazleton for second semester, I
wondered if I would encounter any nights when my
sleep would be interrupted by the piercing noise of a
fire alarm. So far, none have been pulled in North
Hall and only one was pulled in South.
Last semester, pulling fire alarms became a great
pastime for a select few in North and South. On any
night, it was a good idea to have shoes, pants, and a
coat handy just in case the jolly jokers struck. After
the first few pulls, the novelty wore off. People
became quite vocal about their distaste for the pulls
as they trudged to the basketball court to take their
place among the other victims. All told, fire alarms
were pulled in South and North anywhere between
two and four times a night. These numbers are
outrageous and only caused negative reactions among
residence hall inhabitants.
Many people chose to take their chances during a
pull and remained inside by hiding in their rooms.
Although I sympathize with these people, their
behavior in such a situation is dangerous and
potentially life threatening. Due to all of the fire
alarm pulls last semester, people became callous and
lost the fear and respect that should be associated
with the sound of a fire alarm. Despite all of the
false alarms, I urge residence hall students to think
twice before staying inside for the next fire alarm
pull. Although it is of great discomfort, leaving the
security of a warm bed in the middle of the night is
the smart thing to do and could save your life.
