BACCHUS presents mock accident for PSU
By: Matthew Niziol
Thursday April 9, at
12:45pm, four Penn State
Hazleton students were
pronounced dead by the
Sugarloaf County Coroner
following a fatal alcohol related
car crash. The two car accident
occured at the intersection of
the entrance road to Penn State
Hazleton campus and the South
Hall parking lot.
Responding to the
accident were the Sugarloaf
County Sheriff’s Office,
Sugarloaf Township Fire Co.
Engine 12, the Hazleton
General Hospital Paramedic
Unit, two Hazleton ambulances,
and a Valley Emergency
ambulance.
The mock accident,
involving sophomore Grace
Hayes and freshmen Kim
Miller, Leeann Sherman, Sam
Nicola, Jason Vichinsky, David
Heitelman, and Jose Morales
resembled a true collision but
was in reality a graphic
representation, presented by the
BACCHUS club, of the danger
of driving while under the
influence of alcohol.
"When I first came,"
said freshmen Kevin Focht, "I
thought it was real. It’s scary.

After using the Jaws of
Life to tear the roof off one of
the cars, the paramedics placed
the four killed students into the
coroner’s body bags.
Nicola, one of the
students killed by Hayes, noted,
"I hope they [the students]
realize not to be stupid and
drink and drive...many people
die from this."
BACCHUS members
hope that students will take
notice to the violence of alcohol
related automobile accidents.
Thousands of college age
students are killed or seriously
injured by drunk drivers every
year. The statistics are
frightening, but seldom heeded.
"Not until you’ve seen a
real accident," commented
sophomore Richelle Frank, "do
you take it seriously."
The mock accident was
taped, and will be edited by the
Hazleton Campus Video club.
BACCHUS plans to present the
video in the Residents Halls to
enhance alcohol awareness.
Zappacosta refused to divulge
exact poll results, but an
estimated 200 students
participated through voting.
The first official duty of the
new president was the
swearing-in of his officers:
Vice-President Carolyn Krall,
Treasurer Joe Bettine, Secretary
Mellissa Eckerl, and
Corresponding Secretary Kathy
Scott.
Government
President,
Bush’s duties and goals
range from continuing as
Student Body Liaison to the
Administration, over-seeing all
clubs and activities on campus,
and upholding the S.G.A.
Constitution to reinforcing a
multi-club litter campaign,
extension of the Commons
Improvement Fund, and
creating more accountability of
Senators to student groups.
Bush has grand plans but
does not intend to tackle them
alone. "What we do [in
S.G.A.] is a team effort," he
commented.
The Bush/Krall ticked
defeated Jon Lalko and Derek
White to capture the presidency.
Bush’s term of office will end
in April 1993.

The '92
Presidential
Candidates
By: Ben Turrano
Well folks s, here we go
again! Its about that time every
three to four years when we,
the American voting public, get
hammered with Vote Now ads,
political telephone polls,
commercials for and against
candidates and enough slung
mud to stucco Giants Stadium...
inside and out. In this race, as
is the case with the past few
presidential races, the American
people once again are asked to
vote for, not the best candidate
for the job as one might expect,
but rather the least of all the
evils running for the job. In a
sense we are asked to choose
between dust, mud, manure,
dirt and sand. All of which
serve the same basic purpose
but only one is least smelly and
doesn’t stain. I used to
wonder why most of the "good"
candidates drop out of the race
early or never accept a
nomination in the first place.
Lee laccoca, Paul Tsongas, and
Mario Cuomo all would have
been on my "to vote for list",
but unfortunately none of them
are running. I suppose they had
enough self esteem and dignity
to not want to be- associated
with the other Presidential
