Faculty Members
College and university faculty
members with research interests
in health physics-related
technical areas may apply for
the U.S. Department of
Energy’s Health Physics
Faculty Research Award
(HPFRA) Program.
Sponsored by DOE’s Office
of Environment, Safety and
Health, the program is open to
U.S. citizens who have full-time
appointments at accredited
colleges and universities in the
United States. The HPFRA
program is designed to increase
the numbers of faculty members
conducting research in health
physics and to improve the
quality of health physics
education. Other program
objectives include encouraging
innovative ideas for research in
the field and strengthening ties
between academic institutions
and DOE facilities.
Awards for the 1992- 1993
academic year will be $50,000.
Award recipients are eligible
for two additional renewals, for
a total of three years. Travel
Hazleton Reaches Final Four
By Corey Gesford
The Penn State Hazleton
campus capped their season
with a 66- 53 loss at the hands
of Penn State Berks at the
Commonwealth Campus
Athletic Conference Final Four
on March 1, 1992. The Lions
finished the season with a 14-14
conference record.
I asked coach Caccease if
he was disappointed in the .500
record. "Not at all," replied
coach Caccease. "We had the
toughest schedule we ever faced
in the 18 years I’ve coached
here. We also had no returning
starters from a very talented
team the year before."
Snowballs: Friend or Foe
By: Nancy Costa
It’s winter time here once
again at Penn State Hazleton,
and sure enough there’s plenty
of that white stuff. Yes, snow
is in the air, but unfortunately
not for long. Housing and
Residence Life will once again
attempt to enforce the "No
Snowball" rule.
There are to be no snowballs,
iceballs, etc... found airborne
around in or out of the
residence halls, due to the
dangerous threat they impose.
funds may also be available on
a limited basis, for trips to and
from a collaborating DOE
facility, to technical conferences
and meetings, and to an annual
program workshop.
Administered by Oak Ridge
Associated Universities in Oak
Ridge, Tenn., the HPFRA
Program supports research in
health physics areas related to
the DOE mission, with
particular interest in radiation
safety and protection. Specific
areas include radiation
dosimetry; rick assessment and
ALARA concepts; radiological
emergency management;
radiation protection standards
and regulations; environmental
monitoring and assessment; and
air monitoring and sampling.
Program participants must
maintain their full-time
academic appointment status
and must conduct their research
at their home institutions. In
addition, they must collaborate
with a DOE contractor or
approved facility and must
submit annual and final reports.
The application deadline for
the 1992-1993 HPFRA
Program is April 15, 1992.
Awards will be announced in
June 1992. For more
"Our conference record
indicated we were still one of
the strongest teams in the
conference, and two of those
losses were at the hands of
Berks, the eventual CCAC
champions this year." To
accent the strength of the Lions
schedule which included the
likes of Bucknell, Army,
Scranton, and Kings JV teams,
Caccease added, "We had eight
games that included three
division I programs, two strong
division 111 schools, plus
Keystone Junior College. We
went 1-7 in those games alone."
Caccease noted he was
looking forward to next year,
With a good arm, aim, and
solid packing these innocent,
soon to be projectiles have the
potential to break windows,
give someone a great bruise on
their back, or even leave a dent
in a nearby parked car. They
also leave one heck of a
slippery mess in the halls when
left to melt after a fight.
So go ahead, make the most
of North Hall’s ’hill’, ’tray’ all
you want, but don’t even think
of tossing snow.

"We have some people on
campus this year who could not
play for one reason or another,
plus some promising freshmen
coming in."
He also added that he would
like to thank those who came
out and rooted for the team, and
expressed that he hoped he
