vy*/ Pres°’ 3 ip sd/S, (cant) lufjcb Hirkster Speaks When you hear the letters WHCB together in a complete sentence, do you think of Penn State's #1 radio stat ion? Probablynot, but that may soon change. As of this semester, many steps have been taken in order to est ablish WHCB as a cred ible unit. As of now, our broadcasting capa bilities are below standard. Our signal can only be picked up in the South dorms and the Commons. As of the New Year, we will be boosting our signal to the North Dorms and the dining hall. Our updating of our standards does not end here though. We recently purchased a new mixing board, a CD player, and numerous other pieces of equipment to better the station for the listening audience. We at WHCB realize that it is easier to keep the radio on FM, so we are trying to find reasons for you to turn to AM. To begin, we will be hav ing contests (one of which will have a LARGE sscashss prize) and passing out a list of the type of music played at what time. Your response has a great amount of influence on the station. If we get response for a song we don't have, we will get it to play. Don't for get we are here for your listening entertainment. It is a FRIENDLY compet itive organization that found it's start right here on Hazleton Campus, j The objective is for clubs to challenge other clubs to an activity of any type. The activities may include, but are in no way limited to, volley-1 ball, soccer, bowling, I Trivial Pursuit, or even I Twister. The only limit I is the clubs imagination. I During the events, SGA I shall act as judge on any-| thing that calls for a I ruling. They will also I keep a running record I posted on the team stand- I ings. The club presidents should have already [ received all the inform- I ation and presents it to I you. If not, bring it up I at your next meeting. I 1.C.C.1 is currently I being tested at several I local campuses in the I area. If the concept I works, there will be an I 1.C.C.1. Olympics against I other campuses. This I could lead to the eventual! intergration into all the I campuses. Be a part of I something that began at I your campus. Join the I ranks of Ichydom today!!! Is it an I organization on campus I designed to promote cam- I pus functions? Most I students were under the I impression that it is the I governing body here at I Highacres. What is the I purpose of an SGA meeting? I Is it to provide a place I for students to bring I forth their ideas so that I they canbe presented to I the administration with I the backing of the campus I government? Why then, I has it turned into an- I other H.C.A.C. meeting? I At University Park USG I is concerned with issues I like: an open budget, I minority rights and en- I roir.nent, tuition increas | es, end the selection of I a new University President. I Here at home we seem to I be more concerned with the I Semiand what to do about I Residence Hall students I that drive up the hill. Granted, the Semi is SGA's main event of the semester, and the parking problem does need to be resolved. I just can't see how an organization that takes to decide what their sweat shirts are going to look like can propose a reason able solution to a problem of weight. What can be done? For one thing SGA can reevaluate it's posi tion. Ask the students for input, or how they feel about a certain pro posal, vote on the issue and take it to the proper people. If the student body's needs are not met, press the issue further. The idea to have different stickers for off campus students is a good one! Let's take it to the administration and get it implemented. This is a problem that is not going to go away. In fact it will get worse. The con struction of a nwq acad emic center, and a new Residence Hall is about to begin. If necessary SGA can get a court injunction to delay the building un- ORPS Cadet. til an adaquate solution is found. I seriously doubt that it will come to that, but we must realize that it could. The university spends millions of dollars a year, why can't they afford two different color parking stickers? If you are rea lly interested about what the school doesn't do for it's students, ask me about the MAC machine that was supposed to be includ ed in the new bookstore. by James Shoemaker JORDAN Rimes Dr. Bryce Jordan, the president of The Penn State University, is seek ing a committee made up of University Park admin istrators, faculty and Staff, and students to meet in order to seek out Dr. Jordan's predecessor. On August 31, 1990, Dr. Jordan will be resigning as the president of The Penn State University. So, what is our concern? Well, the Board of Trust ees has decided to choose two students from Univer sity Park to sit on the committee. One student will represent USG (Under graduate Student Govern ment) , and the other student representing GSA (Graduate Student Govern ment) . So what happened to a representative from CCSG (Commonwealth Campus Student Government)? Why is the Board of Trustees denying CCSG a seat on the search committee? Should n't the Board of Trustees realize a new University President will not only be the president of Univer sity Park, but to 19 more Commonwealth Campuses, whose enrollment makes up close to 50% of Perm State's popu;ation. Right now P.J. Sternberg , Coordinator of CCSG, is fighting a political war with University officials trying to get a seat issued to CCSG. So, the issue now lies in the Hands of the Commonwealth Campuses and their Student Government Association Presidents. What do "we" do as a mem ber of CCSG? The first step in the right direct ion, I feel, is to pass around two petitions; one petition to the student body and the other petit ion to the Faculty and Staff. It is an absolute Necessity to show our con cern to the situation. It is pertinent to the Hazle ton Campus as well as any other Commonwealth Campus, to show that this must be tackled head-on. So, as Penn State's number one Commonwealth Campus, let's pull together and let's make the Board of Trustees realize how serious we are!!
