Did you know that SGA is the governing body at the Hazleton Campus? Did you know that all issues concerning the students on the Hazleton Campus are addressed through SGA? Well, this is what SGA is all about!! SGA's purpose, as stated in our constitution con sists of several elements. SGA represents all stud ents in every facet of student life. Emotionally, socially, and academic ally, we serve the stud ents in order to enhance student life at the Hazleton Campus. Although SGA is not required to hold social activities such as dances, we do sponsor some events that focus on the social needs of the student body. Somw activities scheduled for the Fall semester include a hypnotist, Dr. Jim Wand, on Nov. 2nd a t 7:30p.m. in the gym, the Bachelcr/Bachelorette Auction on Oct. 23 at 9:00 p.m. in the Commons (proceeds to benefit the family of a Penn State alumni), and the winter Semi-Formal "The Big Chill" on Dec. I st at Zola's Catering Service in Hazleton. Many of SGA's issues relate to both the academic and emotional aspects of student life. These issues cover a wide variety of topics. They range from campus security improvement, increasing faculty in volvement, and the Cultural Diversity Plan all the way to the campus parking problem and the present smoking policy. SGA's core body is composed of four officers, ten senators, and four ex-officio members. The advisors of SGA are pres saps Cy Falatko and Dean M Callus. The president of SGA is Keri Greene, the Vice President is Kathy Ryan, the Treasurer is Frank Aiello, and the Secretary is Ann Marie Downs. The head of the senate is Michael Gladnick, followed by four sophomores and five freshmen. SGA, in the past, has held their meetings in the Commons Lower Level Conference Room. But because of this year's high enrollment of en thusiastic freshmen, SGA's meetings are now held in the Common's TV Room from 12:30 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. EVERY THURS DAY. As you can see, the Student Government Association is probably the most prosperous and profitable club on the Hazleton Campus. We are the liason between the students, faculty, staff and administration. SGA is sometimes referred to as the "UMBRELLA CLUB" because we "cover over or control every club's money and existance. For those of you who were involved in Student Council during high school, then SGA is for you!! For those of you who were not active in high school, make SGA be for you! Even if you are not interested in becoming a member, just come to a meeting and observe what goes on. If you have the SLIGHT_ EST INTEREST in knowing what is happening to you and your campus, then do not sit back and watch. GET INVOLVED, and take charge of what is happening to your campus. Become a part of SGA, "WE"RE THE GOVERNMENT!!" September was a great month for SUB and October looks just as promising. On Tuesday, October 2nd at 12:00 noon in the Commons we have Jim Barber and Seville, the ventriliquist act. Then Bert Seagar Jazz Quintet will be in the Commons Tuesday, October 3rd at 7:30 p.m. Also in October we have the Nittany Trombone Quar tetet. This will be on the 11th at 7:30 in the Commons. Looking forward to seeing you. foileen The Organization For Town Independent Students has gotten off to a Great start this semester. We participated in Club Fradango/'Best Buns Contest, which was an Excellent success. We also held the Dining Hall Mixer, with RHC, in which an on-campus student took an off-campus student to dinner, and vice versa. We are planning Assassin for October 9-13, and participating in the Bachelor/Bachelorette Auction with SGA, SUB and RHC. We will be conduct ing our phone surveys in which we will ask off campus students to rate their apartment, and in December we will pass out our annual care packages . We have our meetings on Monday's at 12:15 p.m. in the Conference Room. See you then! ARMY ROTC Although Penn State Hazleton ROTC may not have as many cadets as. some schools, we have a quality program. This semester we have many activities which enrich the normal curriculum and provide the cadets with a oppor tunity to have fun while learning something. On Saturday 2 Sept, the Air National Guard flew a Sikorsky Skycrane into the campus and took cadets up for an orientation around the Hazleton area. The sophomores and some freshmen took a trip to Gettysburg on Saturday 23 Sept, as part of the syllabus for the sopho more's Army 203 class. Major Arthur provided an ecplanation of the events which occured on that historic battlefield and shaped the course of the Civil War. The Rangers have traditionally been the most active club in the company and we have several activities plann ed. On 29 Sept, the Rangers along with some other members of the company will travel to Nescopeck for an over night Field Training Exercise (FTE). We will be supplied with M-16's loaded with blanks and will work on small unit tactics in the woods. We will conduct a rapell ing trip on 7 Oct. and act as aggressors for the National Guard unit in Hometown in early Nov. The orienteering and Military Historian Clubs have activites planned as well. This year's ROTC program should provide a fun and intellectually stimilating time forall. Page 2
