BOXING CANOEING CYCLING DECATHLON DIVING FENCING GYMNASTICS HANDBALL AAUW / Harriet Wenner McGeehan Scholarship Awarded to Penn State Hazleton Campus Student The Harriet Wenner McGee han / American Association of University Women scholarship for the 1988/89 academic year has been awarded to Dorothy Maylath of West Hazleton. This award, given annually by AAUW and Harriet McGeehan, is given to a woman who is return ing to college after having raised a family or in the workplace. Ms. Maylath is a single parent of four children who is beginning college twelve years after gradu ating from high school. In order to support her family, she works as a waitress while attending the Penn State Hazleton Campus. Despite the difficulties of working, rais ing a family and attending col- lege, she has been able to main tain a 3.67 grade point average in the College of Liberal Arts. Her goal is to complete law school and become an attorney. ilvmpic even Harriet Wenner McGeehan in whose honor the scholarship is named is a graduate of Penn State and, prior to her retirement, was a mathematics teacher in the Hazle ton schools. She is a member and past president of the Hazleton Edu cational Council, the advisory board of the Penn State Hazleton Campus. For her community ac tivities, she has received numer ous awards; she is a Distin guished Alumna of Penn State. It is her interest in higher education for women, especially women whose lives include raising fami lies and work, that prompted her to fund this annual scholarship giv en through the American Associa tion of University Women. The Bavard D. and Ethel M. have been awarded to eight students at the campus. These scholarships are offered to recognize and assist out standing undergraduate students enrolled at the Penn State Com monwealth Campuses; they are given to outstanding full-time stu dents. Christine Checefsky - Peck ville, PA: sophomore in the physi cal therapy assistant program. John Chernansky - Beaver Meadows: sophomore in the baccu lareate degree program in engi neering. Paul Hoffman - Montrose, PA: freshman in the bacculareate de gree program in engineering. Michael Jordan - Bangor, PA: freshman, enrolled in the baccu lareate degree program in engi neering. The Hazleton Campus Scholar ships have been awarded to six students who were selected by the Penn State Hazleton Campus Scholarship Commitee; academic excellence and financial need were used as criteria in the selec tion process for this scholarship.
