Highacres Colleg Volume 5 Number 1 Are You by Debbie Goodrich Are you involved? Do you know who you S.G.A. president is? Do you know who sponsors events on this campus like the Best Buns contest? Chances are high that you may be able to answer the second or third question but the probability of students answering "yes" to the question "are you involved" is relatively low. Why don't students want to get involved? As a college student, it is difficult to budget time and it becomes even more difficult when one is involved in extra curricular activities. Many students ague that they are here for an education and that is true, but there is a time to be a student and time to be you and explore new, different things. The time is now for y ou to become involved and the first step toward involvement is the become a part of the Hazleton Campus Student Government. The Student Government Association (S.G.A.) is only one of the many clubs on this campus. The primary purpose of S.G. A., according to the constitution is "to provide a liason between the student body and the administration, faculty, and staff so that student opinions and attitudes with respect to the Hazleton Campus and the University can be presented and discussed .. .." S.G.A. is also responsible to promote and coordinate group functions and activities which will best serve the Hazleton Campus' student body. If you have a problem, don't just talk about it, do something about it with the Student Government's help. No one should be intimidated by the size of this university because even though we are only a small fraction of the student body a Penn State, we can make a difference. It starts with student involvement, not abusive language toward the university. Another argument which students have which prevents them from getting involved is the fact that students do not feel that extra-curricular activities will The Pennsylvania State University Involved? help them get a job, only a diploma can. However, this may change in the near future. The Penn State Commonwealth Campus" Student Government is trying to get approval for dual transcripts, a dual transcript will not only include a students academic record, but also any extra-curricular activities in which he/she were involved in during college. This could give a person the extra "edge" needed in getting a job in this competitive world. People who are usually involved in activities possess better communication skills because they are accustomed to dealing with people and at times assume leadership positions. Which reveal a person's leadership qualities. Almost every job today involves some type of contact with people so think twice before saying "no" to getting involved. S.G.A. could be the beginning of better things to come. The S.G.A. meetings are held every Thursday in the Commons Conference room. It begins at 12:30 and lasts approximately a half hour. Any one is welcome. All freshmen are even more encouraged and invited to attend the meetings. In March, the student government will begin the election procedures for the new S.G.A. officers and senators. It is up to you, mainly the freshmen, to continue the quality work accomplished this year for next semester. Vet, it is just as easy to sit back and say, "someone else can do it". You could be that responsible student who could make things happen. Don't be a "dorm potato" and criticize what others are trying to do for the benefit of this campus either. Put you money where your mouth is and see your ideas be put to work. Get involved in S.G.A., now! The Highacres Collegian would like to thank Mr. Don Tombasco for the use of the EET lab for the publication of this paper. Best Buns II: More fannytastic photos inside. New Life for the Laurel Mall by Tony Guzzardo As we fully engulf ourselves in the midst of the winter season and patiently wait for the arrival of spring, we have discovered a few changes in the Hazleton area. One that I will focus on is the arrival of new stores in the Laurel Mall and the attractions that will be coming to the mall in the future. We saw the arrival of three new womens clothing stores... the Petite Shop (specializing in clothing for the smaller size woman), Plumms (casual and evening wear), and Amy Stoudt's (larger sized clothing). The Listening Booth merged into Wall to Wall Sound and Video where they are now specializing in all types of music and electronics. The HUB (fashion for men) relocated within the mall itself. continued on Pg. 5 ian February 19 Collegian Sta itor in Chief Gina Donofrio Associate Editor; Bethann Longenecker Michael Klein Section Editors Editorial John Burd Entertainment Mark Piedmonte Creative Brian Stone Sports Bill Reader Staff Greg Adams, Stacy Bagley, T< Brady, Beth Breznak, Chontej Copeland, Therese Gill, Debb Goodrich, Tony Guzzardo, Chi Hunt, Kelly Jansen, Jen Mintz, Kevin Tucker
