Opryland Holds Auditions

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - - Rep
resentatives from Opryland, the
Nashville theme park with a re
putation as a stepping stone to the
movies, Broadway and the
recording industry, will be,look
ing for talent in the Pittsburgh
area Dec. 1.
The Pittsburgh auditions are
part of a 23-city nationwide tour
that concludes in Nashville Jan.
Along the way, Opryland's
audition team will see several
thousand hopeful performers, mu
sicians, conductors, stage man
agers and technicians in 19
states. Only about 400 will pass
the test.
The Pittsburgh auditions will
be on Thursday, Dec. 1, from 1-4
p.m. in Studio 4 of Lawrence hall
at Point Park College.
These will be the only Penn
sylvania auditions this year. No
appointments are necessary for
the open-call auditions.
John Haywood, Opryland's
entertainment director, says
those auditioning have only a
short time to impress the scouts.
"When you audition, it is
very important that you're re
laxed. Do the material you feel
you do well, material you are
comfortable with. Most impor
tantly, do what you do best and do
it first," he said.
According to Haywood, Opry
land is looking for performers
proficient in virtually all styles
of American music, with versa
tility being the key factor. Both
non-country and country enter
tainers are being sought.
The audition team that
searches for those performers
consists of the park's entertain
ment director, a show director, a
choreographer, a choral director,
a pianist/accompanist and a coor
dinator.
Singers should be prepared to
perform three numbers that-show
ability to handle both ballads and
upbeat selections. Singers should

Dancers will be asked to pre
pare a routine of no more than one
minute. A record player and a
cassette player will be available.
Most instrumentalists will be
asked to sing read, and woodwind
players must be proficient dou
blers. Conductor/pianists must
submit a resume and references,
and a piano audition will be re
quired. •
Stage managers and techni
cians should bring resumes.
Stage managers will be inter
viewed at the auditions, while
technicians' resumes will be for
warded to Opryland's technical
director. -
"Without bragging a bit, I can
say that.we find - - and hire - -
some of the best young performers
in the nation," Haywood said.
Performers who are cast will
begin rehearsals as early as Feb.
1, 1989, or as late as the middle of
May, 1989, depending upon the
production.
