Bth Annual
BACCHUS
General Assembly
By Traci Fischer
November 10-14, Shirley
Knelly - Advisor, Traci Fischer -
President, and Colleen Smith -
Vice President of BACCHUS, at
tended the Eighth Annual BAC
CHUS General Assembly which
was held in Chicago, Illinois.
The conference was made up of
approximately 100 schools across
the United States, and 400 people
attended. At the Conference,
Penn State Hazleton was awarded
with a Certificate of Merit for the
display, which we took with us to
show our creativity during Na
tional Alcohol Awareness Week.
The conference was helpful to our
BACCHUS chapter in that we had
the opportunity to attend numer
ous educational sessions which
taught us new things. We also
had the opportunity to hear what
other BACCHUS chapters have
been doing, which gave us new
ideas, which we look forward to
implementing on our campus.
All in all, the National Confer
ence gave the Penn State Hazleton
Campus the opportunity to show off
its effort in promoting the best pos
sible alcohol awareness program
provided through the efforts of our
local chapter.

By Beth Breznak
On November eighth, 46 mil
lion Americans trekked to their
nearest polling place and voted
for a new president, and unless
you've been living in a tent be
hind the soccer field or have been
consistently intoxicated since
November seventh, you now know
that the voters chose our former
Vice-President, George Bush, to
lead the nation for the next four
years.
Bush's Democratic opponent,
Michael Dukakis, gave him a
significantly close race, especial
ly if we look back at how the Dem
ocrats fared in the previous two
elections and the Republicans
made landslide victories. Bush
gained fifty-five percent of the
popular vote while Dukakis had
forty-five percent. What made
Bush's win all the more victori
ous was the number of electoral
votes he pulled in - 426 compared
to Dukakis' 112. 270 electoral
votes constitutes a win. The Dem
ocrats do have a majority of the
Congress though. With a Repub
lican President and a Democratic
Congress, the next four years cer
tainly shouldn't prove to be dull.
Despite the problem that the is

murky and unclear as the Boston
Harbor, George Bush captured the
88' election. It may have been his
past experience or possibly the
"grandfather figure" he seems to
portray so well that steered the
registered public his way. It
doesn't matter much now though.
He won. MTV asked people on the
streets of New York who they
planned to give their vote. The
general consensus was "... the
lesser of two evils..." This atti
tude seemed prevalent across the
nation.
Well, congratulations
George. It's back to the depths of
Boston for "Michael - The Greater
Evil."
The Eagle is
Back
By Ivan Ski
After 10 years of being dor
mant, Eagle Rock Mountain is
back on track and hotter than
ever! This small wonder, in my
opinion, is going to be one of the
best ski areas around.
After going to a ski club meet
ing to find out about becoming a
ski instructor, I met Lon Schultz,
the director of the ski school at the
Eagle. I received a very good im
pression from the meeting, and
immediately pursued the opportu
nity. Within a week, I was at the
mountain, scoping out the scena-

rio -- which, incidentally, is less
than 10 minutes from campus.
When I first pulled in at the
Eagle, I had to stop at a security
post and get clearance to go back
to the lodge. Once I got back to the
lodge, which had about a million
construction workers hammer
ing and sawing profusely, I met
up with Lon. He gave me a small
tour of the lodge. Now, I've been to
about 40 or 50 lodges in my life,
and this lodge is second to none!
Words can't really describe what
I saw, and, for lack of a better
word, it was AWESOME.
The first thing I saw was this
huge rock, boulder, mini moun
tain (or whatever you want to call
it) inside the lodge. Around this
"rock", is a beautiful bar with
brass fixtures and such. Also,
there are all hard wood floors and
mirrored posts running up to the
top of the gigantic cathedral ceil
ing. I felt ad if I were in Europe
during a James Bond movie or
something of the like.
I know, you can't judge a book
by a cover or a ski resort by its
lodge, but boy 'o boy, I'll tell you...
out of control!
