In February of
this year, the land
was cleared across
from the Kostos
Building and the
ground was broken to
make room for the
latest addition to the
Penn State Hazleton
Campus. When students
began to question why
the land was being
cleared, we were
informed that it was
to be the site for our
new bookstore. To the
students it was not
just a new bookstore,
it meant mainly three
other things.
As a result of
the suspension of
Alpha Phi Alpha at
University Park, the
issue of hazing has
become a matter of
great concern.

The reason for the
new bookstore was the
result of the increase
in student enrollment.
The present store was
originally only capable
of servicing 400 people.

This year the enrollment
is up to 1,200, three
times that of which our
bookstore can adequately
accommodate. The new
store will be five times
as large as the old
store, more space, more
merchandise. Mr. Ted
Imbert, Bookstore
Manager, said they are
trying to purchase a
better variety of things
for our bookstore which
will be similiar to
those at University Park.
I also asked Mr. Imbert
about the rumor that the
new store may be a head
quarters for other
campus'. He said
nothing is definite
yet. If it is a
headquarters, it will
be more like a
"collecting area for
four other campus'."
I then proceeded to
ask him about the
possibility of a MAC
machine being in the
store. Again, he said
nothing is definite
yet and University
Park will make the
final decision about
this and other matters
concerning our book
store.
The tentative
date for completion
of the bookstore is
October 24, 1988.

As with any closing
of a store, it is
possible that there
may be a clearance
sale but as far as any

students will just
have to wait and see.
So start saving your
money and be ready to
do all your Christmas
shopping in the new
Penn State Hazleton
Campus Bookstore this
December.

is hazing illegal in
Pennsylvania, but it
has no place in an
educational institu
tion committed to
positive human
development.
