    Olympic
by Edward Nyerick
I was somewhat shocked and confused to hear that
the Carter Administration has recently threatened to
pull the United States out of the 1980 Summer Olympic
Games in Moscow, Russia.
What have the Olympic Games become? Am I
wrong to suggest that the Olympic Games were
originally devised to bring about peaceful competition
of athletes from all over the world? Why have the
Olympic Games become an antithesis of their primary
goal?
Is the President using the Olympics as some sort of
bargaining chip or retaliatory measure against the
Soviet invasion of Afghanistan? Should the United
States set an ever impressing and reprimanding void
in the Summer Olympics? Should we urge other
nations to follow the United States and withdraw
completely from the games?
Why must athletes give up what might have been a
rewarding experience in a lifetime of preparation
because of politics which happen to go hand in hand
with peaceful athletic competition? Perhaps the
Summer Olympics should be held in another country
besides the Soviet Union. Perhaps the games should be
scrapped altogether.
I do not hive answers to my questions, but if you do
I would be glad to hear them.
Early finalists named
for Bahamas trip
by Edward Nyerick
How would you like to spend
four days and three nights at the
beautiful 'Holiday Inn Beach in
Freeport, Grand Bahamas? Well,
as you probably know,
McDonalds' and W.A.Z.L. have
combined to offer this cahance of
a lifetime prize.
All you have to do is attend a
Penn State, Hazleton Campus
home basketball game and pick
up an entry blank. Fill out and
return the entry blank to
McDonalds. At half-time on the
following Condor's home game,
ten persons are selected from the
previous home game. These
people join those selected at
every Condor's home game. The
following have been selected for
the Condor's first five home
games: Dr. Jerry Covert, Len
Swankoski, Terry O'Donnell,
Herb Welsh, Cathy Wezner, Finn
Petersen, Charlie Palermo,
Alberta Cann, Lynn Trefsgar,
Judy Scalzo, Laura Wagner, Lori

On February 8, 1980, the final
drawing will take place at half
time of the Hazleton Condors-
Baptist Bible College basketball
game. Media coverage will
include W.A.Z.L. and local and
area newspapers and television.
Many people have had their
names drawn more than once,
and of course their odds of
winning the vacation trip have
been greatly increased.
Attendance at the Condor
Basketball games has been poor
(averaging about 100 persons per
game). This results in a 1 in 10
chance of being drawn as a
semifinalist. Obviously, the same
people have attended the
Condor's home games. Thus,
their chances have been greatly
extended due to the poor turnout
of fans.
There is no admission to any
Penn State- Hazleton Campus
Basketball game. There is no cost
to pick up an entry blank for the
Grand Bahamas' trip. There is
still time to attend a Condor
Basketball game and start taking
advantage of McDonalds' and
W.A.Z.L.'s offer for a free $6OO
trip to the Bahamas! Act now!
