By MARIANNE PINDAR When students hear the name of this month’s Collegian Per sonality, it immediately brings to mind an image of “the lady in the Library who is responsible for breaking up our in-between class social get-togethers*” New students, before you all become discouraged and put down this article, remember: ‘it’s the good librarian who upholds the true meaning of a library - to create a peaceful, working atmosphere for its diligent college students.’ Now that the air is cleared on that matter, let’s get better acquainted with our librarian - Mrs. Mary Ferry. Mrs. Ferry has been employed as a Librarian at PSU for twen ty-three years. Before coming to Highacres, she taught senior classes in English Literature at McAdoo High School for nine years. Mrs. Ferry has taught English and still teaches a Library Studies course in ad dition to her position as head librarian here at Highacres. A former resident of Jijn Thorpe (Mauch Chunk), Mrs. Ferry presently resides in West Depending on your feelings toward the University, you may find some Penn State souvenirs amusing or downright disgusting. Penn State propaganda ranges in everything from pencils to ponchos. At several locations in State College you can buy just about anything in the old Blue and White. T-shirts, probably Penn State’s best advertisers, were the top sellers. Lions on toilet seats with the appropriate saying for the Pitt game were big sellers this fall. She’s married, has two children and a pet poodle named “Buffy.” Her son and daughter, who she claims are her “real pets,” are former PSU’students. Mrs. Ferry attended Kutz town State College, received her Bachelor’s degree from Muhlen burg and her Master’s degree at Temple University. She still does graduate course work at Kutztown State. Only once, has she taken a class at Penn State, a grad course in (A.V.) audio visual arts. In her career, Mrs. Ferry has been involved in Elementary education, Secondary education and Library work. Being that her mother was a first grade teacher, Mrs. Ferry felt that this would also be her life’s work. Once she had contact with this field, she found she didn’t like it as much as she had anticipated, and changed to another area of study. This is one of the reasons she feels college is a valuable in vestment, “once you’re there, you can change your career choice, because the opportunity to investigate various fields is open to all.” Our personality, attributes her Other hot sellers were “Joe’s University,” “Penn State Sugar Bowl 1979,” and “Rah-Rah” hearled by Snoopy and Wood stocks. There were more than 100 T-shirts designs seen around State College this year. Penn State is also on beer mugs, blankets, bottlecaps, and bookbags. There is absolutely no - escape from the Blue and White. The three major bookstores in State College, the HUB Bookstore, the Student Book Store, and the University Book Centre, carry a wide range of Penn State propaganda. Annette Demoto love of books to her parents. She states that her family loves to read and books could always be found around her home. Since she began working at Penn State, Mrs. Ferry said the most excitement for her, came with the building of the new library. She was in on the plan ning of the new structure. Her involvement mainly concerned selecting and co-ordinating the library’s entire decor. This writer learned that the present library site is also the third one. Previously, it was located in the Memorial Building, it was later moved to the Main Building, and now the library is housed in it’s present location, - a brand new building all to itself. In addition to her job, Mrs. Ferry enjoys teaching and working with the students. She’s always willing to help. She states that the majority of students (at Highacres), are serious in their college work. I hope through this article, one can clearly see that Mrs. Ferry fills the position of Librarian more than adequately. Mrs. Ferry - Keep up the good work and be happy! K m (g)Army ROTC Capt.
