Dale Garges, V-Pres.
Dear Students of Highacres,
This year the STUDENT UNION
BOARD (SUB) wishes to offer YOU more
activities than ever before. We plan to run
Coffeehouses, Dances, Movies, and other
activities including the annual “Las Vegas
Nite”.
The STUDENT UNION BOARD,
however, needs your support. Support in
the way of attendance at the activities or in
helping the STUDENT UNION BOARD
itself run these actiyities. If you have any
ideas or wish to help; SUB meetings are
held every Wednesday night at 6:30 in the
Commons. Suggestions may be dropped in
the Mailboxes of the STUDENT UNION
BOARD president, Rob Blyler, or vice
president, or in the SGA office located in
the Commons. Remember, the STUDENT
UNION BOARD works for you. SUB!!!

The Outings Club is a club open to all
students at the Penn State Hazleton
Campus. Its purpose is to provide mem
bers with an opportunity for enjoyment in
varied activities, and to help them to
obtain new or refine old skills in activities
of their choosing.
Our fall activities, planned at our first
meeting on September 7th are: Camping,
orienteering, backpacking and hiking,
hang gliding, rock climbing, spelunking,
and bicycling. A hike on Hawk Mountain
on September 23rd was our first outing for
the year.
If any of our activities interest you, there
is still time to join by contacting Dr.
Covert or Jill Moody.
We speak' of the “Average
American” but perhaps what is most
wrong with our nation is that too many
Americans are only average.
With orientation over and Fall term well
under way, one may begin to wonder what
the Hazleton Campus has to offer outside
the classroom. This year as in previous
years, many students find fun, excitement,
and challenge, in the intramural sports
program here at Highacres. What better
way can there be to release frustration,
meet new people, or just have a good time,
then with some organized competition?
The Physical Education Department
offers some of the newest and finest
equipment available for yo.ur enjoyment;
and at a very minimal charge. For 50 cents
this fall; you can dunk, pass, spike, or
serve your way to a First Place standing.

Toga disco a success
Or, for $1.50 (a person) for a three or five
man bowling team, you can roll your way
to a winning position. But the fun' does not
stop there. The Intramural Sports Board
offers trophies to all members of the First
Place teams. This year the Board is
“batting” around the idea of replacing the
trophies with a more useful award, T
shirts, and a team picture for display.
So think about the intramural sports
bulletin board, in the Physical Education
building, for the Intramural Sports Board
meetings and tell us your suggestions for
the sports that you have. The meetings are
open to you, for suggestions and com
ments. So that we can make this a better
year for you, join a sport and come to the
Board meetings with your ideas!

A 1 Cwalina
There are quite a few new faces in the
Residence Hall Council (R.H.C.) this year.
In fact all of the RHC officers are new to
the Council. My name is A 1 Cwalina, and I
am this year’s President. I will be assisted
by Vice President Bill Snyder, Treasurer
Joe Ritsko, and Secretary Jo Anne
Polzella. The real workhorses of RHC, the
committee heads, are Sue Ringes, Tom
Reed, Mary Pat Cowan, Janet Harrington,
and Celeste Tauber. Mary Pat, Celeste,
Janet, and Tom are all seasoned veterans
of the Council. Floor Governors for the
Fall term are Carol Becker, Pam Collear,
Linda Begin, Norm Zwolenik, Joe Tarsi,
and Pete Ulrich. Our new advisor this year
is Mr. Tom Shea, the Residence Hall Co
ordinator.
There are other changes apparent in this
year’s RHC. The most obvious is that due
to financial difficulties the RHC dues were
increased from $5.00 to $7.50 per school
year. Another big change is that weekly
RHC meetings are now held in the lobby of
the Residence Hall so that each person
living in the dorm has the opportunity to
voice hisopinion to the Council. Previously
the RHC meetings were held in a much
smaller room than the lobby.
This year’s Council is full of new and
great ideas. For example, the Toga Disco
which was recently held in the dorm lobby
was a huge success. We are presently
planning such activities as a Halloween
Masquerade Party and dance with horror
flicks to be shown in the lobby afterwards,
splash party at the pool, ping pong and
pool tournaments, and competitive sports
and games between the floors. These are
just a few of our many scheduled events.
We have also ordered magazines and
newspapers for the magazine rack in the
lobby. So, if you do not have anything to do,
you can come down to the lobby and plop
your feet on a stool and read one of ten
different magazines and newspapers.
The first fund raising event planned for
this year is a car wash to be held on
Saturday, October 7th. If your car is dirty
and needs to be washed, we’ll do it for a
very reasonable price. All you have td do is
drive your car to the Laurel Mall between
11:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.
Presently, RHC is painting and
preparing our new office which is located
in the basement next to the laundry room.
The office will allow the Residence Hall
Council to be a more effective
organization.
In this office, a phone will be installed
for the use of the dorm residents. It will
enable them to call long distance direct,
thereby reducing any charge placed on
them by the pay phones. The only
stipulation is that the residents have paid
their RHSA dues. This is just one of the
many ways RHC serves the students.
As a closing statement, I would like to
welcome the opinions of all the students. If
you have an idea or a complaint, the
Residence Hall Council and myself are
always willing to listen. If you have the
time, how about stopping by at one of our
meetings which are held on Mondays at
6:00 p.m.
Thank you,
' A 1 Cwalina
