New Soccer Coach Appointed
The return of only tour members from
last year’s soccer squad would seem to be
a disadvantage of the 1977 edition of the
Highacres Condor Soccer Team. An
abundance of new freshmen talent
together with the returning members are
being directed by a new coach this year.
The new coach is Bill Lockwood, a real
estate broker by profession who played his
college soccer at Saint Francis in Loretto,
also has had coaching experience on the
high school level at Bishop Hafey High
School for six years.
The fact that Lockwood will have only
four returning players means that he must
rely on the incoming freshmen for talent.
According to Lockwood, he has that talent.
Returning are the following: Mel Rawls,
Gary Smith, Rich Acor, and Mark
Gingrich. New members on the team in
clude the following: Andy Tobelmann,
Glenn Vaengle, Bill Chambera, Jerome
Panisak, Charlie Walton, Dave Wetzel,
Tony Sidari, Glen Schultz, Charlie
Pogmore, Jim Cressnan, Jim Geffer, A 1
Bartolai, John Coll, Paul McGuirk, Ron
Whitmoyer and Andy Kryemien.

years, but Lockwood said that the team’s
talent makes up for its size.
The Condor’s first win was against a
tough defensive team from the Baptist
Bible College with a score of 3-1. The
Baptist Bible game was won on individual
talent in the opinion of coach Lockwood.
The three toughest competitors the
Condors will play are the Mont Alto,
Delaware, and Ogontz campus teams.
These three teams achieved a three-way
tie for the championship in 1976.

Sports Talk
First of all, allow me to introduce
myself. I’m Jim Dino, Sports Editor of The
Collegian since Winter Term 1976-77. The
articles were written in such a way that
the reader got the information in a clearer
fashion by the inclusion of my own per
sonal opinion to a point at which I thought I
remained objective to the subject. In
Sports Talk I will try to give you some of
the little tantalizing bits of sports trivia
along with editorializing to its fullest point.
If you have any comments on information
in the column or on the concept of the
column itself, drop a few lines in mailbox
88-B. Also, if you have any little pieces of
information you would like to share, I’m
willing to listen. The column is being
provided so that you, the reader, can enjoy
sports, campus or professional or anything
in between, all the more.
The first bit of campus info I’d like to
deal with is that Highacres has its own
school colors and sportsteam nickname.
Most commonwealth campuses within the
Penn State system adopt the school colors
and nickname as that of the Main Campus,
namely Blue and White and the Nittany
Lions. However, in order to avoid am
biguity, many campuses have aodpted
their own school colors and nickname. In
an election held during Spring Term 1977,
Highacres adopted the colors Green and
Gold and the nickname Condors (a bird
known to live in high places). The
uniforms of the intercollegiate sports
squads will adopt the new colors in
reference to their uniforms, bearing the
new nickname. The bookstore also has in
stock Condor T-shirts with a condor on the
front and the new colors. Hopefully, the
change will give the teams and fans more
pride in identifying with Highacres’
sports.

Highacres opened during the fall and
formally dedicated during the Spring
Term a new 3 million dollar physical
education complex at the north end of the
campus. The facility has many features in
the interest of physical education. The
building and these various facilities will be
open at the following times:
Monday 12noon-9:00P.M.
Tuesday
Wednesday
Thursday
Friday
Also, beginning at 5:00 P.M., ID cards
will be checked at door. ID cards will also
be needed to borrow equipment. The
gymnasium will be closed from 3:30 to 5:30
P.M. for basketball practice. Intramural
activity will take priority over any in
dependent activity. Finally, free lock and
towel service will be provided by seeing
Mr. Bruce Young, Phys Ed building
coordinator.
The facilities in the new complex include
swimming, to be open in the near future;
weightlifting, in the universal room
anytime from 9:00 A.M. to 9:00 P.M., and
bowling on Wednesday nights from 6-9:00
P.M. (tentative), with the cost being $.50
per game and 3 games for $l.OO.
The gym open hours announced above
have been placed in jeopardy through
vandalism that is going on. Incidents in
cluding the ripping off a wall of a sink and
the plugging of several toilets with paper,
and if continued, will close the building to
except for scheduled classes and in
tramural activity. It always seems to be a
few who ruin a good thing for everyone
else. ITiose of you responsible, think of
others. In regard to yourselves, you’re
ruining a good thing on yourselves also!!!
