2- The Highacres Collegian, April 29, 1977 And Now The Good News... To the Editor: It is time to give some campus clubs and organizations the oppkrtunity to stand up and take a bow. Throughout the academic year, clubs at Highacres have been sponsor ing drives and activities to benefit various charitable organizaions. With the coming of Spring, a number of charity drives have been undertaken at High acres. The Circle K Club sold daffodils, the profits benefitting the American Cancer Society. April Fool's Day, appropriately enough, was marked by activity spon sored by the Fraternal Order of Lunatics. However, the fools used this day to under take a very serious activity, a drive for the American Can cer Society. Highacres Club Advisory Council helped sponsor the March of Dimes Walk-A-Thon by acting as the campus reg istration center. On April 20, the Student Union Board held and ice cream eating con test, with the registration fees benefitting the American Heart Association. Comeriety, an annual cam pus production, is presented to benefit a camous scholar "ship fund. Another ammual ship fund. Another annual charity drive is the "Trick or Treat for UNICEF" program sponsored by the Theta Sigma Pi Sorority. These Highacres clubs and organizations should be lauded for their civic mindedness in sponsoring these projects. It is hoped that this trend will con tinue^, Unsigned editorials represent the official views of 'the COLLEGIAN as determined by the Board of Directors. Or you, as a psy chology major, stop to think why you need X number of Math credits? And you, the engi neering student, didn't you ever ask yourself why you must have History or Arts? Wake up you sleepy gener ation! Stop being so passive about the education bu — —it system! Why does a pre-Law stu dent have to include a language in his/her curriculm? Since what ice age does a plant sci ence major need calculus? We were all told in grades one through twelve we needed a well-rounded education to be well-rounded people(both in know ledge of facts and in knowledge of people). I definitely agree. Having Biology in high school prompted me to major in it in college. Also, having Calculus as a senior alerted me to the fact that I definitely did not want ot get into Math as a career. Terrific! Now, as a college student, I am still getting that line and, since I feel that I am round enough, Ino longer buy it! I want to get done, get out, and get started with a job; not mess around with courses that I won't need and definitely don't want. I think it would be great to take an American History course if I happened to be terribly in terested in American History even as I am a science major. What really upsets me is that I have to has£ or Hu manities courses even if I couldn't care less about one of them. LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Wake Up Students either Yet we go along with this . crazy anarchy of learning., They say "Take this and that. It's required." and we.say "Yes, sir. Whatever you; say, sir." We may grumble a little, but we' never actually say "Why? It doesn't relate to my field. I don't like the subject. Arid I will most likely never have; any use for the material even if Ido remember it. Thereofore take your garbage courses and stick them in your left ear!" Why shouldn't you, the stu dent, get the type of education you reall need arid want? We should be alerted to the courses we need for our major and take those courses. Then, if we. have a few outside points of in terest, we can always take a course or two in those areas. However,‘these "have to" and required lines are ridiculous. Wake up students! Ask questions! And get answers! You have rights as individuals! Besides, who is paying whom for your education?!!!
