Dual-Piano Team To Perform;
natural Communication
*Ed. Note: LeDuc and Engel will
be appearing in the Classroom
Building (C-1) on November 14
at 7-: 30 p.m. The performance
is free and open to the public.
For a duo-piano team, the
trials as well as the pleasures
of performing are doubled. Ar
rangements for two pianos re
quire a special rapport between
the artists. LE DUC and ENGEL
communicate naturally in a way
apparent to all who hear them.
As one critic praised their
playing of Rachmaninoff's Two-
Piano Suites No. 2: "They com
municated Rachmaninoff’s spe
cial feeling for the piano, and
the music flowed easily between
the two instruments."
Their understanding of the
music they play is enhanced by
their interest in other arts.
Each enjoys visiting museums
and galleries to view painting
and sculpture. Ballet is a par
ticular favorite of Monique Le
Due, while Charles Engel is an
avid theatre fan. Additionally,
Monique is a gourmet cook, pos
sessing an unerring sense of
herbs and spices instilled in
every Parisienne from child-
hood. Often they combine media,
and in one enormously success
ful program, Charles Engel col
laborated with Hobson Pittman,
the distinguished painter, to
demonstrate parallels in music
and painting. He also hosted
his own radio show from 1958
to 1966 featuring such guests
as Eleanor Roosevelt, Patricia
Neal, Ayn Rand, James Baldwin,
Catherine Drinker Bowen, Joshua
Logan, Tennessee Williams and
many others.
Each had played as a solo -
artist before forming the team.
Miss Le Due, after graduating

concertized throughout Southern
Prance performing recitals, in
chamber groups and with orches
tras to much acclaim. In 1958,
Mr. Engel won the Concert Art
ist Guild of New York competi
tion, and the following year he
participated in the Modern Mu
seum Festival of Radio Station
WNYC. His formal New York de
but in Carnegie Recital Hall
came in 19&0.
Mr. Engel's development of
the Debussy program led him to
select Monique Le Due as a
partner in the presentation at
museums, colleges, and cultural
centers. The success of the
programs was so great and the
rapport of the artists so im
mediate that the duo piano
team of Le Due and Engel emerg
ed shortly as the dominant in
terest in the career of both
artists.
Both, in addition to concert
touring, devote time and energy
to teaching at Temple Univer
sity and other local Philadel
phia music schools. Included

Bravo,"Ondine”
On, October 50, 31, and Nov
ember 1, the Drama Club pre-
sented Giraudoux's "Ondine" in
the Highacres Commons.
It was pleasantly surprising
to witness such fine theatrical
talents of various actors and
actresses throughout the play.
Susan Dahlin's performance as
Ondine was truly convinci’-'?, as
she portrayed her chara r rto
the fullest. Other exceptior'-
performances came from Bra
McNab as Auguste and Ron Dr-.
as Lord Chamberlain, both add
ing a comical touch to the play
through their humorus portray
als; and Cheryl Matteo's com
peling performance as Bertha.
"As the audience of Girau
doux you will feel this to-
night—you will understand to
morrow* - thus read a sentence
from the program of the even
ing, which proved ..tself true.
Such a performance will
easily be forgotten. He. J.ly,
Highacres can look forward to
other such productions from the
Drama Club before the school
year is over.
