VOLUME TEN NUMBER SEVEN Fine Arts Festival Successful The Greater Hazleton Area Pine Arts Festival 10 was held during the weekend of May 9 at Highacres for the first time in the festival's history. Everitt Binns, general fes tival co-chairman and assistant to the Dean of Student Affairs, noted that over 5ยป000 people attended the festival during its three-day duration, begin ning May 9 with a reception for exhibitors, entrants in the various shows, and the patrons and sponsors of the festival. Kafka To Retire After 20 Years By James Gormley Professor Andrew Kafka will retire this year after twenty years of dedicated ser vice to Penn State and its stu dents. He was active in many areas of university and Hazle ton community life in the area of speech and its applications. During .the twenty year per iod Prof. Kafka was active as the moderator of the Great Book Society of Greater Hazleton. He also participated in form ulating the "continuum plan" of the Pa. Department of Ed ucation which made"a compre hensive speech program for Pa. students in kindergarten through junior college. He was active in community and arts programs which had a more prac tical application of speech in business and professional pursuits. The next day, Saturday, saw fine weather and over 1,500 per sons viewing the many exhibits and performances. He distinguishes what to do in the future as Continued on page 8. Awards Banquet Held Thursday The Fifth Annual Award's Banquet was held on Thursday, May 15, at Gus Genetti's Motor Lodge. The purpose of this ban quet was to provide recog- nition to outstanding students in the various organizations, along with the presentation of other special awards. Richard Nork, president of SGA, was Master of Ceremonies. After an invocation by Christine Slivka, the large group in at tendance listened to an address by Frederick Ciletti, Director of Commonwealth Relations.
