BELLES LET TRES FESTIVAL HELD On April 26, the Belles- Lettres Society sponsored its annual High School Reading Fes tival in the library. Opening remarks were made by Prof, Kafka Dr. David, Mark Dehke, and Dale Walck, President of Belles- Let- • tree. After opening remarks, the contestants who represent ed ten high schools in the area, were led to separate parts of the library for their indivi dual categories by the chair men. Donald Serfass was the chairman for drama, Linda Gallagher was the chairwoman for poetry, and Donna Marie Bayer was the chairwoman for the prose division. Awards were presented to the first place winners in each category. In prose the first place was taken by Kar en Lawson for her emotional rendition of" Master Gunnery Sergeant" by William Harris. Connie Dickson captured first place in the poetry divis ion for her reading of "Welsh Incident" and "The Saint" by Robert Graves. Barbara Smith won first place for her read ing of The Importance of Being Ernest by Oscar Wilde. Judges included Mr. Robert Bonner of the PSU Commonwealth Campus libraries; Mrs. Rhoda Paradise Janov, of the National Friends of Public Broadcasting; Elaine Maddon, a librarian of the State General Hospital School of Nursing; George Miller, a member of the Tamaqua Times- Newe_ptaff; Alan Price, a mem ber of the faculty of this cam pus, all in the drama division. In the poetry division, Mr. Jay Breckinridge of the faculty here, Miss Eileen Brenner of the Greater Hazleton Commun ity Player of the JCC; Miss Jane Galgoci, a librarian for the Hazleton Public Library; and Prof. Ernest Haeussler of the faculty of.Highacres, were judges. The prose division was judged by Mr. Gene Collins of the Fine Arts Council of the Greater Hazleton Area; Miss continued column two NEW HORIZONS PRINTED The newest issue of the New Horizons Literay Magazine is in print and can now be ob tained•in the COLLEGIAN Office in the Game Room of the SUB or from any member of the Students for a Creative Society. The magazine if filled with poetry and art and stories by the stu dents of Highacres. It is the belief of the staff the this is the best Literary Magazine to have ever been published here. So if you don't have your copy yet, be sure to rush out and buy one. The cost is only a mere pittance. I will do my best to do whatever is best for Highacres. lam open to suggestions, and will try to make the activities of S.G.A. known to all students. I ask for the support of the students, especially in activities planned for the students. Nothing will work without everyone becoming in volved and helping out when help is needed. I know that all the rep resentatives you elected are willing to work and are very interested in the well-being of Highacres. I will continue to fight to keep the public off the ten nis courts if the matter is not resolved before the end of this year.
