PARNASSUS
INITIATION
The Parnassus Chapter of
the Keystone Honor Society in
itiated its new members and
elected officers Thursday / Ap
ril 25, 1974. The lighted
candle ceremony, led by facul
ty advisor Mr. James Concannon,
was held in the library.
The new members include
Donna Bayer, Mary Delazio, Bar
bara Mace, Maureen Marcus, Mary
Ann MeGlory, Ricky Nork, An
thony Seo, from Hazleton; Donny
Serfass and Tom Shea from Tama
qua; Mary Beth Pollack and
Mary Francis Postupack, Tres
kow; William Michael, Montrose;
Dennis Gramata, Pottstown;
Charles Hiller, Berwick; Kim
DePue, Kresgeville; Theresa
Kranyock, Beaver Meadows,
Marian Honis and Mary Melenchek.
Harwood Mines; and Maria J.
Rovito, Shamokin.
After initiation, new of
ficers were elected; Bill
Michael, president; Christie
Tito, vice-president; Donna
Marie Bayer, secretary; Donny
Serfass, treasurer.
The purpose of Parnassus
is to recognize the all-around
student who maintains high aca
demic standards and whole-heart
edly participates in and sup
ports extra-curricular activi
ties. Parnassus also deems
fine character and personal
integrity;as essential fac
tors in developing the well
educated student.
Linda Gallagher, Parnassus
chapter president, presided
over the meeting. Dr. and
Mrs. William David and Mr. and
Mrs. Concannon were special
guests. Keven Concannon served
as Sergeant-at-arms.

SCULPTOR
VISITS
Highacres was honored this
week by the distinguished pres
ence of Oliver LaGrone, the
poet and sculptor of Detroit.
Mr. LaGrone treated the students
and faculty to a demonstration
and lecture on the fine points
of sculpture in the Student
Union Building on April 24 and
also showed the film, "Why Man
Creates." On Thursday he visit
ed the Arts I class, and on
Thursday night held an informal
discussion and demonstration in
the Resident Hall. Mr. LaGrone
also visited many other organ
izations in Hazleton, among
these a lecture to all of the
art teachers from the Hazleton
Area School District at Hazle
Elementary School, a lecture and
discussion at the Jewish Com-
munity Center, and a demonstra
tion at the Hazleton Art League.
Mr. LaGrone's works have
been exhibited in shows in
New Mexico, Michigan, Ohio, and
Illinois. His works are in
many private collections. He
has been commissioned to do

sculptures of such famous people
as the Rev. Charles A. Hill,
Judge Crockett, and Harriet Tub
man. Mr. LaGrone is presently
a teacher of social studies in
the Detroit Public Schools,
teaching Afro-American History.
Mr. LaGrone is also a poet
of high calibre. He has had
two of his books of verse pub
lished and his works have ap.4
peared in many anthologies of
black poetry. He has had re
views, articles, and poems
printed in various periodicals,
and the Ginn Co. is including
his poetry in their high school
text, The Study of Literature.
Mr. LaGrone is presently work
ing on a book of African Art.
Perhaps he will return to High
acres someday to lecture on
his poetry and favor us with
some of samples of his poetic
works.
