' If one were to pass The
Most Precious Blood gymnasium
on a Tuesday or Wednesday at
5:00P.M., he would hear the
sounds of bouncing basketballs
and shouts. If, by chance, he
should stop in the gym to watch
the game, he would probably be
surprised to see who is actually
playing. The shoruts are not
coming from a men's basketball
team, but from the Highacres
womens' team. The team, under
the direction of Coach Deidre
Jago, is busily preparing itself
for the 1974 basketball season.
This season the team,
sporting new uniforms, will
consist of the following
women: Sandi Gross, Mary Beth
Pollock, Carole Shenosky, Rita
Reck, Beth Moyle, Theresa
Kranyock, Mary Tack, Debbie
Hoffman, Joanne Jaycox, Rose
anne Ziminsky, Randi Herschel,
and Mary Angie DeLazio. The
women are hoping that they
break in the uniforms with a
winning season.
Mrs. Jago and her team
are eagerly awaiting the tap
off for their first game of
the season, which will be held
at the MPB Gym on Fourth and
Seybert Streets in Hazleton,
on Wednesday, January 30,
at 5:30. The team's season
will begin away against the
Scranton Campus of Penn State.
On February 11, and on the
13 of February, they will end
their home games by playing
against the Schuykill Campus.
The hard work will finally end
on February 23, when the
Highacres Womens' Team travels
to the Ogontz Campus to par
ticipate in a tournament with
the other Penn State Campuses.
Hopefully, all their practice
will pay off, and women will
bring home a trophy.
At any sports event at
Highacres, the students are
led in the cheering by a group
of women who sit on the side
lines and yell. They are our
own Highacres cheerleaders.
These women practice hard in
by Mary Angie DeLazio
order to support the members
of the various teams. In a
game, these women are some
times the difference between
a win or loss for the team.
The women who make up the
cheering group are the follow
ing people. Captain Karen
Beltz, Mary Frances Postupack,
Linda Guest, Lori Hackmeister,
Patti Blust, Janet Liss,
Monica Sweda, Debbie Burgess,
Diane Steward, Linda Faust,
and Diane Zeiner.
The teams and the coachers
owe a great deal to these women
who give up their time in
order to support the teams at
Highacres. Without the cheer
leaders, the gymnasium would
be a quieter place. The
girls' efforts are greatly ap
preciated by the people at

HOCKEY
by BILL MICHAEL
Vicious as they may seem
to the casual observer, the
freezing temperatures that
invariably accompany winter
at Highacres generously pro
vide ideal playing conditions
for a relatively new breed of
campus athlete--the hockey
player.
This year, a group of
ice hockey enthusiasts, who
were both regular spectators
of the professional game and
avid participants in amateur
and high school contests de
cided to form a hockey club at
Penn State Hazleton. The
students received full coop
eration from the City of Ha
zleton Recreation Department,
which provided them with an
outdoor skating rink. Mr.
Breckinridgei a Highacres Eng
lish professor, has offered to
serve as the club's advisor.
Although the team is just
getting underway, the players
are already optimistic about
the Winter Term season. They
