Jimi Hendrix - Rainbow
Bridge
More Hendrix? - How can
this be? It's true, Rainbow
Bridge - Jimi Hendrix is his
newest album released by
Reprise. The album has been
billed as the sound track from
the movie of the same name -
"Rainbow Bridge." If you
notice, the album was released
much earlier than the movie.
The reason - to keep both the
amatuer and the pro
bootleggers from taping it and
then passing it off as the sound
track.
The movie was filmed on
Maui in Hawaii at the Rainbow
Bridge Occult Center, Jimi
appears only briefly in the flick
- once shown having a strange
dialogue and then again during
a concert on the side of a
volcano. So far the movie has
been moving slowly across the
country, but if you get the
chance - see it - It will truly be
a visual experience!
In many ways this is one
of Hendrix's best albums. It
brings out the true Hendrix in
the studio. He utilized his
knowledge of electronic
technology to stretch the limits
of sound experience far
beyond that of a live concert.
In his recording studio
"Electric Lady" - he unleashed
himself totally - to explore
regions never touched before.
He controlled his tape-mixing
console just like his Fender -
but he wasn't into effect for
gimmick - but was in search of
the ultimate of sound
experience.

"Dolly Dagger" is the first
track on the album. And what
a way to start an album! He
provides a pulsing guitar
rhythm that sends you floating
into his fantastic world of
sound. The next cut -
"Earth Blues" features the
Ronettes (you remember
them!) in the background
chorus. An equally superb
sound is created here.
"Pali Gap" is an
instrumental which brings out
the jazz man of Hendrix. This
one featuresJuma Edwards on
percussion.
"Room Full of Mirrors" is
the next track with tuddy
Miles on drums. Again Hendrix
can draw us with him into his
mirrored room where all you
can see is yourself.
The last cut on side one is
the "Star Spangled Banner."
This older version was cut in
March 1969, and is not quite as
lively as the in-concert one.
Here he used only guitars -
layer upon layer of sound. But
nothing can surpass the live
version. I'll never forget the
first time I saw him in concert
at the Spectrum in Phila.
Absolutely tremendous! At
that time he was still, with the
original Experience. They gave
a fabulous performance,
topped off with the "Star
Spangled Banner''
AAIIEEEE!
Side two is only 3 tracks
long and opens with "Look
Over Yonder". This is the

oldest track included. It was
cut in October 1968 and
features the original
Experience (Mitch Mitchell on
drums and Noel Reddington on
bass).
The next track "Hear My
Train A'comin" is the only live
cut on the album - taped at the I
Memorial Day Concert at
Berkeley. This cut reveals
Hendrix, the bluesman. He
incorporates both the old delta
style blues with his own
"Voodoo Chile" blues. Yes, he
is truly a bluesman - and proves
he can wail as good or even
better than the rest.
The final track on the
album is "Hey Baby" a rather
lonesome song which bares the
inside yearnings of Jimi. You
can almost feel the end coming
- and then it does - much too
soon!
This is the last of Hendrix
in the studio, although there
may be more concert, albums
to come. There is still a lot of
unreleased Hendrix material
that will remain unreleased
because Jimi was a
perfectionist and he just was
not satisfied with it.
Well, there you have it -
Rainbow Bridge - a fine array
of the various Hendrix sounds.
Re c ognize his superb
musicianship not only in this
album, but on all of them. He
was the best, but now he's
gone, out of sight perhaps,
but
So surround yourself with
his music and "....let Jimi take
over..."

`Heart Is a Lonely Hunter
to be shown here Jan. 26
Some of the strangest
dialogue an actor ever had to
learn fell to Alan Arkin while
starring in Warner Bros.' "The
Heart Is a Lonely Hunter," to
be shown here Wednesday, Jan.
26, at 7:30 p.m. in the lecture
hall of the new classroom
building. Donation is 35 cents.
Arkin, a master of
articulate dialogue, who won
an Academy Award
nomination for his first motion
picture, "The Russians Are

the deaf
To get the hand siganls,
Arkin read books and studied
films on the subject. He also
took lessons in sign language
and lip reading from a deaf
acquaintance.
In his poignant role as the
deaf-mute, John Singer, Arkin
brings warmth and friendship
into the lives of lonely people
in a small town. Among them
is Mick Kelly, a 14-year old girl
played by newcomer Sondra
Locke, who made her
professional acting debut after
winning the role in a national
talent search.
