Note: Veteran actor, singer, and radio personality qdy Vallee recently completed a successful four-night stand at Stan Genetti's Tyrolean Room in Hazleton. John Roslevich, Jr. of the Highacres Collegian, wits granted an interview with Vallee following his opening show on November 1.) In talking with Rudy Vallee, I soon found that he is endowed with an excellent memory. He proved this by recalling accurate dates from his illustrious career during the course of the evening. He keenly rememberee another successful show he had done near Hazleton- this one was exactly 40 years ago at 'the Lakewood Park Ballroom. The 69-year-old Vallee included a few anecdotes about Vice-President Spiro Agnew in his repertoire. I asked him for his opinions on Agnew. He said, "I think he's a fabulous man. He's honest and frank. Right or wrong, he speaks his mind. He's got a lot of guts. And he likes tennis and I do!" That last remark.is typical of the atmosphere that prevailed throughout the night. Despite his great fame, he in no way acted snobbish or pretentious. Next I asked him about his education and he replied, "I worked my way through. I went one year to University of Maine and transferred to Yale and started all over again. It meant a great deal, especially to be a Yale, Harvard or Princeton man. I wouldn't do it again." About college in general he said, "I think it's a waste of four years. A degree B.A. or Ph.D. means nothing. It doesn't fit you for anything that the other guy hasn't got, equal to what even a high school student has." "A diploma doesn't mean what it used to. Time was when just with a diploma you could get a job. It doesn't mean a damn thing. The average college degree doesn't mean a goddamn thing." Following his interview and dinner, he invited me to his room at the Holiday Inn to talk further, but more important, to watch his favorite late night talk shows. Upon entering the parking lot, he noticed tha his name was misspelled on the marquee prdclaiming, "WELCOME, RUDY VALEE." His surname contains two l's. He remarked that he would only pay half of his bill because of the error. Evidently someone caught the misspelling that night because the next day his name contained the extra I. While watching the Johnny Carson Show, Phyllis Diller came on as a guest. Vallee remarked that she had been on his plane into New York a few days earlier. Very casually he said that he had been on Carson's program 12 times, as well as having appeared on Dick Cavett, Joey Bishop, and Mery Griffin. Those certainly are legitimate credentials in anyone's book. Vallee didn't seem to think so, though. Students- Check out Amity Book Shop 12 S.
