. . . "A FLAG OR A DOOR MAT" . . .
The Summer Olympic Games are
perhaps the most thrilling of all
sports events. Through these
games, bitter rivalries between na
tions are converted into friendly
competition. The Olympic athletes
usually strive to set an example of
good sportsmanship. Politics is
banned from the games.
Naturally each athlete wants to
win, and if he achieves his goal
bursts with pride when after being
presented with his gold medal, he
listens to his national anthem. The
behavior of Tommie. Smith and John
Carlos on the victory stand after
receiving medals in the 100 meter
dash was a shocking break of Olym
pic tradition, and a radical display
of smugness, bigotry and bad man
ners. What should have been a
proud moment for the athletes and
this country became an embarassing
situation when these two represent
atives waved clenched fists in
black gloves during the National
Anthem.

Mr. Topf
Demonstrations such as this are
unexplainable and certainly do not
enter under the realm of the Olym
pics. Carlos and Smith may have
been proud to be "Black Ameri
cans", but the fact remains that
there is no separate tally of medals
won by negro or white athletes.
One can imagine the chaos that
would prevail if demonstrations like
these were permitted to occur, if
the Polish protested Soviet rule or
if perhaps South Korea slandered
North Korea. New events would
have to be incorporated into the
games, with gold medals awarded
for mudslinging and picketing.
Fortunately, the behavior of the
other contestants were more con
ventional. This "Black Power"
incident was as embarassing to the
United States as a hiccup in the
middle of a solo would be to an op
era singer. It marred the beauty of
this international event, but did not
detract from the total dignity of the
Olympic Games. Yet, it certainly
would have been better had the in
cident never occurred.
WHO'SE
LEGS?
Plans are being made for the an
nual Faculty-Student Comriety Show.
Last year's production was well re
ceived. Students still talk about
Dr. Staudenmaier's legs. Those in
terested in helping with the show
or those who wish to perform are
asked to sign up or see Mr. Shae
vel, who is in charge of the event.
Students are urged to attend the
performance. They may see a side
to their teachers they never real
ized.
HIGHACRES COLLEGIAN
FACULTY SPOTLIGHT
MR. DEFINA
Our teacher in the, news this
time is one of our engineering profs
--Mr. Defina.
When asked what his attitude to
ward a traffic light at the entrance
of Highacres was; he replied with,
"A light will be a hazard." He is
definitely against having one and
suggests that two stop signs with
flashers would be better and should
serve.
We couldn't let the presidential
race slip by without asking a view
on that. He says, "keep your mind
.
open to the last minute before you
vote."
Switching to a lighter subject
we find that Mr. Defina also likes
some of the "young beat" music of
today. "All new art forms should
be given a chance to develop, but
some are weirdo."
In summary, we asked what he
felt was most rewarding in his
teaching? He answered directly
with, "When students are enthused
and happy about any accomplish
ments and discoveries they hays,
made, even though I have contribut
ed little to it."
Mr. Defina has been teaching for
fifteen years (and we are glad to
have him here at Highacres).
