SOCIAL
NEWS
by Kathleen Gibson
The month of October will be a
very busy one. Many social events
have been planned.
This year we on the Social Ac
tivities Committee are trying to get
really good bands. Some of the
bands scheduled have played suc
cessfully at University Park;
others have won various band con
tests. We are doing our part by pro
viding these good bands; it is up
to you to support your school by
attending them.
Friday, October 18 is the night
of the biggest Social Activities
event of the year, Las Vegas nite.
It will start at 9:00 pm. Admission
is $l.OO or an activities ticket.
There will be horse races, pocker
games, dice wheel crap games,
chuck-a-luck, and card games.
Soul lovers! This is your
chance to hear soul played the
way it should be on October 25.
"Something Soul" will be playing
here from 9:00 pm till 12:00 pm.
On November I, a Halloween
Dance will be held. "The West
Gate Five" will play. Do you
want to find out how many children
you will have? Would you like
your palm read? Your handwriting
analyzed? Or gaze into the cry
stal ball and have your fortune
told? Then come to our Halloween
Dance in costume or Pay Double!!

SPORTS
by Robert Ko zak
The year of the Nittany Lion is
in full swing. Before the start of
the current season, Penn State's
eleven has ranked as one of the top
teams in the nation. Currently
sporting a 3-0 record and number
three national ranking, the charges
of coach Joe Paterno are living up
to pre-season expectations. The
lions opened the season with a 31-
6 victory over a determined Navy
team. Kansas State was the next
victim, losing 25-9 last weekend,
the boys defeated a strong West Vir
ginia team 31-20.
Coach Paterno was reportedly
very proud of his team's comeback
victory over Kansas State. "This
is the time," he told his team at
half-time, "to see if you have
it." And they did.
The victory over Kansas State
has a taste of misfortune. Half
back Bob Campbell, All-American
candidate, suffered a shoulder sep
aration that will place him out of
action indefinitely. He will be
replaced by Gary Duel or Charlie
Wilson, both sophomores and lack
ing experience.
Most newcomers to the Hazleton
Campus are not aware of the many
opportunities available for partici
pating in athletics. Intercampus
competition is held in chess, bowl
ing, ping-pong, and basketball.
In addition, there is an extensive
intramural program available to in
terested students. Intramural foot
ball and basketball teams are now
being formed. Anyone who enjoys
keen competition and would like
to join one of the inter-campus or
intramural teams should sign up on
the appropriate sheet located on the
bulletin board in the S.U.B. cafe
teria.
