Page 4 NINE WIN HIGH SCHOOL FESTIVAL The Ninth Annual Regional High School Reading Festival, sponsored by Belles-Lettres Society was held on Wednesday, April 24th at High acres Campus. The contest was divided into three sections: I) Dramp, with Joe Rusnock acting as Master of Cere monies, 2) Poetry, with Gordon Clay as Master of Ceremonies, and 3) Prose, with Joseph Skawinski act ing as Master of Cerempnies. The following students were respective ly, first, second, and third place winners by category: Drama-Dru Ann Chuchran, Mar ion High School; Vilma Avery, Ber wick Area High School; James La Buz, Hazleton High School. Prose—Glenn Puhak, West Hazle ton High School; Lana Bodner, Mount Carmel High School; Robert McGeehin, St. Gabriel’s High School. Poetry—Ann Hines, St. Gabriel’s High School; Karen Higgins, Sha mokin High School; Nancy Martzen, Hazleton High School. The general sessions before and after the contest were presided by John Gallagher, President of Belles- Lettres Society, and by Professor Andrew Kafka, faculty advisor. The participants were each pre sented with a certificate, and the winners were presented with awards. It was the largest gathering yet to witness the event, with over 100 persons in attendance. MRS. The oper- AUXILIARY HOLDS CARD PARTY Mrs. Mary Ferry, President of the Pennsylvania State University Women’s Auxiliary, and Kathleen I. Stone chaired the Auxiliary’s an nual Card Party on the evening of April 23rd in the SUB. As is the custom, tables were set up in the Lounge and in the cafeteria and pinnochle, poker, can asta, bridge, etc. were played en thusiastically by a capacity crowd* of women. This year, through the efforts of Jack Donahue, a sophomore at High acres; Bingo was the hit of the night. As Master of Ceremonies, he made the game lively, colorful, and fast moving. Local merchants supplied the Auxiliary with a varied selection of 72 door prizes. A $65.00 assortment of pottery was chanced off at the end of the evening with Mrs. Diem of Hazle ton as winner. Cookies and coffee were ser ved during and after the games. The delicious assortmentof cookies were donated by members of the Auxiliary. All proceeds from the party will go towards a Student Loan Fund which supplies many of the stu dents atHighacres with badly need ed short term loans. A new project which the Auxiliary hopes to get underway, with the help of the pro ceeds from this fund, is a Student Scholarship Fund. ation was very successful, and she is now convalescing at her home in Hazleton. She will be returning to the Campus, hopefully, for Fall Term, 1968. ACTION FOR LIGHT CONTINUES Action to install a light at High acres has been initiated by the stu dents of Penn State University. On the day of registration, the students and faculty signed a petition to in stall a traffic light on Route 93. This Petition has been sent to the Sugarloaf Township Supervisors. Also, duplicates of the petition were sent to Thomas Harrington, District Engineer of Report of High ways; Robert Bartlett, Secretary of Highways; Bill Kline, Chief of Highway Safety; Louis Feldman, State Highway Commission; Gover nor Raymond Shafer, and Senator Murray. Recently, the Traffic Control Committee received a letter from the Department of Highways. They acknowledge our petition to the Sugarloaf Township Supervisors. As soon as the Supervisors request the light, the Department of High ways will study the location. The Traffic Control Committee is sure that Highacres will receive that light if there is organized ac tion taken by the student body and support from the local newspaper. STUDENTS GIVE BLOOD A Bloodmobile will be held on Tuesday, May 14, between the hours of 10:45 and 4:45 at St. Gabriel’s Church in Hazleton. The quota for Highacres is 47 pints of blood. To donate blood you must be be tween the ages of 18 and 59. If you are under 21 years old, you must have your parents or guardian sign a parental permission slip. Pledge slips and parental permis sion slips may be picked up in the SUB or in the Dispensary. Highacres Collegian
