Perfect weather and precise
timing by the lilacs, rhododendron,
and the coeds of The Pennsyl
vania State University’s Hazle
ton Campus made the annual May
Ball held Saturday evening, May
23, in the Student Union Building,
a most aesthetic event.
This year the ball sparkled
with the bright colors of “Man
hattan at Midnight.” The decora
tions were a tribute to those stu
dents who gave freely of their
time during the preceding weeks
to create the setting. Music by
the Crescendos contributed to the
atmosphere of gaiety.

EMETH CROWNED HAY QUEEN AT HIGH
Esther Nemeth, president of
the Theta Sigma Pi Sorority, was
crowned Queen of the May Ball
by last year's queen, Kay Yencho.
The actual coronation was pre
ceded by a court processional
which included: Geneva Avilliion,
crown bearer; Karen Kreitzber
ger,; key bearer; Paulette Vetter,
rose bearer; Janet Astleford,
heart bearer; and Molly Boyer,
scroll bearer. Carol Yurkovic
served as maid of honor, and
Anna Marie Petras was the sec
ond attendant.
The honor guard escorting the
queen’s attendants was comprised

of Thomas Tucker, Donald Girard,
John Mumaw, John Houser, Jack
Martin, Anthony Molinari, and
Prank Tito. Jeff Hunchar served
as the queen’s partner.
To climax the coronation, the
queen and members of her court
danced to “The Emperor Waltz.”
The queen and members of her
court were chosen by a center
wide election of student body and
faculty members held under the
auspices of the Highacre’s Theta
Sigma Pi Sorority. Mrs. Elizabeth
Bodenstein serves as advisor for
this organization.
The May Day tradition began at

the Hazleton Center in 1945, and
is , sponsored annually by the
sorority. When the Penn State
Campus moved to Highacre.s in
1950, the May Day, celebration
combined the coronation of the
queen with May Day rites and the
Queen’s Ball.
The affair was open to Hazle
ton Campus students and their
dates, faculty members, their
wives and friends.
Refreshments were served fol
lowing the ceremony by the Cam
pus’ Women’s Auxiliary. The
coronation spectacle was witness
ed by more than 200 guests
assembled in the Highacres’
Student Union Building.
