Joan lacurci, Ronald -Kolesar, Francis Ktibilus, Kathleen Kumke, , (Continued on page three) HAZLETON CAMPUS, HAZLETON, PENNSYLVANIA At the recent two-day speech concourse held at Behrend Cam pus, Erie, Pa., Professor Andrew Kafka of the Hazleton Campus faculty was elected President of the P. S. U. Speech League for the academic year, 1963-1964. The general annual conference is called the Speech Convocation. At this time, student representa tives from Speech 200 courses of all commonwealth campuses give talks in three categories: persua sive, informative, and entertain ing. Participating for Highacres this year at the Erie Concourse, Charles Swinehart, 3rd term EST., gave an entertainment speech. The.Hazleton Campus will host next year’s concourse, expected to be held in May, Mr. Kafka has an nounced. The objectives of the P. S. U. Speech League, now headed by Mr. Kafka, are as follows: 1. To develop, through wider experience in speech situations, the concepts and principles stressed in Speech 200 classes. 2. To promote friendship and fellowship among the students and faculty of P.S.U,. 3. To develop a co-curricular activity, growing directly out of course work, yet allowing for growth into an inter-collegiate -program. 17 INITIATED BY PARNASSUS Seventeen students at the Hazle ton Campus of the Pennsylvania State University have been for mally initiated into the Parnassus chapter of the Keystone Society, honorary society at the local cam pus. Initiated were Andrew Baigis, Kathleen Botchik, Gerald Boyle, John Cerasaro, Eugene Dorneman, Donna Foster, Richard Grovich, Kathleen Kumke, Esther Nemeth, Taylor Searfoss, Gregg Smith, Mary Temke, Jean Turse, Law rence Wydock and Carol Yurkovic. Also accepted into Parnassus this term, but absent for initiation ceremonies, were Anetta Long and Phil Jeffries. These students have qualified for this honor on the basis of scholar ship, leadership, character and Service. At the meeting held after the ceremony the following officers were elected for the coming school year: Andrew Baigis, president; Esther Nemeth, vice-president; Carol Yurkovic, secretary; and Kathy Botchik, treasurer. The retiring officers are: John Rosenstock, president; Thomas Evans, secretary; and Carolyn Egger, treasurer. Rudewig Pres. Of M.G. Club Charles Rudewick was the final choice of the Mental Gymnastic Club for president for next year. He will be assisted by vice-Pres ident, John Opilla, and Secretary treasurer, Donna Foster. The members also voted on the amount of dues they would pay. $l.OO was agreed sufficient to cover club costs. This will finance the, cost of .the prize given to the student with the most points obtained by solving mathematical puzzles. The present officers of the club are: Larry Lash, president; John Rosenstock, vice-president; and Charles Rudewick, secretary-treas urer. June 4, 1963 Term The annual Hazleton Campus Convocation dinner will be held on June 10, at 6:30 p. m. in Genetti’s Pennsylvania Room. The main speaker. Chairman John Fazio has announced, will be Professor 'Clifford Nelson; from the Religious Studies and Account ing departments of the University Park Campus of Penn State Uni versity. After the dinner, various awards will be presented. Book awards will be given to outstanding schol ars in different fields. Activity awards will be presented to mem bers of all chartered societies on campus. The Sophomore and Freshman chosen as most valuable in their respective'classes will be announced also. In addition, a new award is be ing added this year. The Hazleton Alumni Association will present a $26 Savings Bond to an outstand ing student of their choice. Tickets for the dinner are priced at .60 for students and $2.60 for guests. Summer Courses At Highacres The following courses will be offered at the Hazleton Campus from July 22 to August 30, 1963: English 1 Composition and Rhetoric (3 college credits). Class begins Monday, July 22 and Mon day through Friday thereafter at 8:25 to 9:46 a. m. Fee is $66.00. Reading and Study Improvement Course (no credit). The course consists of 80 minutes per day, five days per week for six weeks. Fee is $60.00 plus extra for work books or texts. Professor Kafka will teach both courses. Math 2 Algebra (3 college credits). Prerequisite is one en trance unit in algebra. Classes meet 9:60 a. m. to 11:10 a. m., Monday through Friday. Fee: $66.00. It has not been decided as of press time who will teach this course. The Hazleton Campus reserves the right to drop any course for insufficient enrollment.
