Survey Taken
Of Enrollments
. An evidence that the expected
enrollment crush has not yet hit
the colleges and universities of the
country is contained in the infor
mation provided by Dr. Garland G.
Parker in the annual study of
enrollment statistics for the edu
cational journal, School and Soci
ety.
“The standout fact in fulltime
enrollments,” says Dr. Parker, “is
a slowdown of freshman registra
tions, with a growth of only 0.3%
indicated in the 531,215 first-year
students in 897 institutions report
ing in both 1962 and 1961.
The year’s small increase con
trasts sharply with the increases
in 1961 (5.4%) and 1960
The lag is attributed to the World
War II lower birth rates.
Freshman enrollments by study
fields showed the following, re
sults: engineering down s.7%de
clines also in business, agricul
ture, and nursing; increases m
education (3.2%) and arts and sci
ences (1.4%).
Other results of Dr. Parker s
study include the following:
1 Full-time students were up
6.2% despite the small increase in
freshman enrollment.
2. Part-time and evening class
enrollments up 7.3%.
3. Grand total enrollment is up
6.5%.
4. Of all students, 54% are in
large public and private universi
ties.
5. Enrollment in the Middle
Atlantic states is up only 3.4%
lowest of the 9 regions.
6. Returns from 1,090 institu
tions show a grand total of
3,493,626 students.
Penn State now ranks 12th m
full-tmie enrollment, displacing
Purude in last year’s statistics
The University of California, with
66,519 students is .first;. „„ e ” n
State is listed as having 19,332.
