Student Aid Head
Visits Highacres
Mr. Ralph Krecker, Director of
Student Aid, recently visited our
campus and gave some tips on
scholarships and loans. He en
couraged scholars to apply for
scholarships between now and
January 18.
Loan applications have not been
printed yet due to some recent
changes. Mr. Krecker stated that
these should be ready after
Christmas but advised waiting un
til the Spring Term to apply with
June 1 as the deadline.
There are two committees which
issue scholarships. One is the Col
lege Scholarship Committee, with
awards given based upon curricu
lum. The other is the University
Senate Scholarship Committee,
awarding general scholarships not
based upon curriculum, but upon
need and grades. This committee
averages 110 scholarships a year.
It is not mandatory to repay
these scholarships, but the Univer
sity hopes that recipients will
make it possible to continue this
practice by someday replenishing
the fund.
Scholarships come mainly from
businesses, industries, and organi
zations; some from an alumnae
fund; and a few from philan
thropy.
About eight hundred students at
Penn State now hold University
scholarships.

Continuing students that is,
those students whose term classi
fication is above the first term—
may apply for upper class scholar
ships during the current 1962 Fall
Term.
Application forms may be ob
tained from Mr. Schneider and the
completed applications should be
forwarded to: Mr. Ralph Krecker,
Office of Student Aid, 218 Willard
Building, University Park.
Students applying for loans
should have a 2.2 average or bet
ter. For those who qualify, the
period for obtaining and complet
ing loan applications for the 1963-
1964 academic year will be from
March 1 to June 1, 1963. Mr.
Krecker reported recently that no
additional funds are available for
the period ending during the pres
ent academic year, except for a
possible emergency loan. Students
needing such loans should confer
with Mr. Schneider.
S.G.A. FUNDS
FINALLY ARRIVE
On October 10 the SGA of the
Hazleton Campus received its final
appropriation which totaled $4OOO.
Since the original request was for
$4585, this has necessitated drastic
changes in the budget. All clubs
and organizations are asked to
keep their expenses within reason
able limits.

Fall Conference
On Friday and Saturday, Oct. 26
and 27, the OSGA Conferenre for
the Fall Term was held at the
Main Campus. Two delegates rep

Registration was held on Friday
from 5 to 5:30 p. m. The first gen

Paul Miller, former Hazleton stu

President of University Student
Government, gave an interesting
dissertation on “Student Govern

progress report on the activities
of its individual Keystone Society
and a report from the Intercam

Workshops were conducted in
two groups with our own Bill Pet
ruska serving as co-chairman for
the first of these groups. That
group made a general evaluation
of the 1962 Summer Conference.
The second group discussed “Local
Campus Gains Derived from the
1962 Summer Conference.” This
concluded the meetings for Friday.
The second general session be
gan 9 a. m. Saturday. A lecture,
“Discipline: An Educational Proc

Simms, Dean of Men. Afterwards,
the reports of the workshops were
submitted.
The business meeting followed.
